Hey guys i have a auto vr which i converted to manual with a series 1 box and starter motor
the problem i have is that wen i go to start it the starter screams like its hitting the flywheel or going to far befor it engages
normally i would just buy a new one assuming the starter is fubared ..
but i find if i move the gearstick from side to side in neutral or putit in first or any other gearwith foot on the clutch it starts most of the time with out a problem
any one had this issue before or no what it could be
also the ring gear on the flywheel is fine
and wen i fitted the starter i pulled it out by hand and it seemed to engage the flywheel fine so am unsure wat is going on..
any help muchly appreciated
I've got the same drama with my dunger VN S1 jam cake. What's the battery connections like at the battery and at the starter? And the ignition wire?? If it's that, then I could be bothered fixing mine. Otherwise it's gr8 for scaring the crap out of grannies when you try to fire her up....
If youre talking about when hitting the key and the starter motor lets out a loud scream but doesnt turn the engine over, then the one-way clutch within the starter motor is worn/wearing out. Mine does it occasionally but not often enough to rebuild/replace it yet.![]()
It sounds like the solenoid isn't engaging the pinion fully with the ring gear before energising the starter - this makes the pinion spin before it engages and makes a horrible metallic scream - if not fixed it will evenually chew the pinion and/or the flywheel up.
This would also tie in with you noting that it does not do it when you have the foot on the clutch - the pressure against the clutch forces the flywheel/ring gear closer to the starter pinion and this allows it to engage before it starts spinning resulting in no scream.
I read somewhere that manuals have a different starter to the auto although you say you have this already.
So basically I reckon the starter pinion is not engaging properly with the ring gear. Good Luck.
thanks 4 all the replies i think ill just replace ity and see wat happens the starter motor itself was outdoors bolted my engine on the for i dont no how long ...
ill just look for a vp auto one there the same...
and yes i have the delco remy high torque starter..
