Hi I have a VRSS with the 4l60e Will I hurt my transmission if I drive it around in 3rd?
It means it will never go ABOVE 3d gear. Meaning at 70+ you're putting unneccessary stress on your engine and transmission. But no, nothing will blow up.
Im only driving around the city and urban in 3rd as it seems to change down easier and feels more torque I put it into Drive when Im doing over 70km also when its in 3rd at about 70km it sounds like it still changes, being an electronic box will it still change?

Keeping it in 3rd is fine. That's all I ever do around the city (except for freeways). If you leave it in 4th you will get a lot of gear changing between 3rd and 4th that could wear out your trans over time. Also leaving it in 4th means that you have to brake on every significant hill to maintain your speed whereas if you leave it in 3rd it's not as much of a problem. On the other hand, leaving it in 4th may marginally improve your fuel consumption.
just do like all the normal people in the world do and put it in 'D'
cheers rocco555 the most helpful post I've had all day, the reason I want to leave it in 3rd is because it doesnt always kick down properly from 4th to 3rd therefore becoming sluggish I just wanted to know if it would hurt my box any if I did
the only thing i can think off with the hard 4th and intermediate that you were saying is that the autos would have a lock up stall converter, its just a standard thing that when you cruise on the freeway, it will drop the revs by a couple of hundred, and soon as you even slightly accelerate, it engages again and if you accelerate more it drops into third. Sort of feels like a gear dropping. If that what you were referring to anyway, if not, theres a bit of info for free.
thanx shiftysle that sounds like a logical explanation and come to think of it I do remember reading something about that in a SC mag
no probs, you will know if the autos going because if it is doing something, it will gett worse slowly, if that happens, get it checked, autos are one thing that if you catch the prob early, you wont ruin a lot of part inside.
I did an error code check and got code 72: Vehicle Speed Sensor could this cause my transmission to play up a bit my speedo still seems to be reading fine?
i was told by a tranny specalist years ago when i bought the vs ute new ...under 86kms use it as 3 speed.. still got it''' tranny had been sevice when logbook said so
i drive the vz same way.... the new trannies now have 5 and 6 speeds your engine will be labouring so use a lower gear around town
thanx stick3 I will go see my transmission guy this week and see what he says but you have all been very helpful thanx and just for the record I only keep it in 3rd under 60km to 70km or so
