    Default powersteering complications

hi guys im new here ive recently picked up my mates 97' VS series 2 ex-cop. i got it for cheap as the powersteering is rooted. having a good mechanical knowledge im doing it all myself so i bought a gregories to help me.

    So far i have:

    drained the fluid
    unbolted tie-rod ends
I havnt unbolted the steering rack yet as im unsure about a few things.

From what i can tell to disconnect the rod (the one that goes to the steering wheel) that connects to the power steering rack it looks like its just one bolt and holds it on. and it slides out once everything has been un bolted. is that correct?

It says to 'lock' the steering so the clock spring doesnt get damaged but the wheel doesnt lock at all. in other words i can have the car in park key out of ignition and turn the wheel till my hearts content. if i lock the wheel with rope will it have the same affect?

do i really need to disarm the airbag?

hope that all makes sense look forward to hearing a reply.

yeah mate if you tie a zip tie arround your indicator stalk and your steering wheel it should do the trick. its just to stop the airbag ribbin from ripping if the wheel gets turned more than 3 times... make sure your wheel was straight. undo your steering shaft, drop your exhaust at the manifolds, undoo the two bolts holding the rack and it should fall out!!! hope it helps!

You don't need to unbolt the exhaust.

When the key is out, tap the barrel so the centre bit pops up, then the wheel should lock. If it doesn't, then tie it to something.

To undo the tie rod ends, take the split pins out and undo the nuts a few turns, then hit the side of the arm that the shaft goes through to "shock" the taper, and it will drop out. Then undo the hut all the way.
