    Default Code 76

    Hi guys,

Have just done the computer check. Came up with code 76.

Car has been hesitating and running rough since I degreased it trying to find a leak that comes and goes. Very verky up hills under pressure, and small popping backfires that go along with its struggles. One minute the coolant, on the rhs of sump, next oily residue on the lhs. Weird.

Anyways, Im only getting code 76. And 12 if u count the first few. Ive tried to find other posts, but others have been getting 40's with it.

If it is an oxygen sensor, where do I find it? And can they just be tidied up instead of replaced?

    Thanks for any help.

could be a stuffed O2 sensor in one bank or could be the earthing issues VS's had with the o2 sensors

    whats this earthing issue thing?

It could be a stuffed 02 Sensor, have only ever got about 280km's off a full tank since I got the car, and i dont' think they ave been replaced.

The plugs are relatively new (about 20,000) and same with leads. Serviced at 315k, its now at 317k.

    My symptoms are:-
    Poor start up
rough running, kind of feels like a clutch slipping on a motorbike.
    small farty backfires

Just incase anyone else has had this trouble and it was something else.

went to super cheap today.. is it normal for a sensor to be over $200?

If I can find one cheaper, should it be a universal or direct fit?

Is there any cheaper things to check out before I go spending money?

Also, I unplugged the o2 sensors, and did another test - reset the battery and did another test. All the same. 12 ... 76...
If it was definatly a sensor, woulnt it tell me?
I did a pretty heavy degrease, could the degreaser or water have got into somewhere and I just cant dry it up?

thanks for any help, its greatly appreciated.. Me and anything motorized just dont mix. Seem to have an attraction to duds.

You probably have gotten water into the DFI module which the coils plug into - this fires the coils and if the coils are not firing correctly you will get a code 76 because the plugs aren't firing and pumping unburnt fuel into the exhaust. This then upsets the O2 readings and the computer detects an imbalance.

You could try removing the coils and check the DFI module plugs for moisture. It's alsop possible one of the coils has water/moisture under the plug lead nipple causing a high voltage leakage.

High pressure cleaning with degreaser will usually cause the sort of problems you describe and the only fix is to remove the moisture. If drying the coils/DFI is of no help then I'd check every other electrical connector - disassemble, spray with WD40 and re-assemble.

O2 sensors (genuine Delphi) are available on Ebay for $55 ea.....I recently fitted a pair of these and have found better fuel consumption....they will not be the cause of missing/backfiring however.
    Good luck.

I done a drying of the coils, and any other electrics i could find - also had a look inside my carby where the pipe meets, and it was dirty as. Put some carby and throttle spray thru. Now Im getting Code 32 & 76.

    Where is the manifold sensor?

And should my car still go with the air tube off the carby? Mine isnt

I had the same problem with code 76, after going the O2 sensor route I removed the injectors and had them flow tested, two were low flow rate on the same bank causing the problem.

32 is just from trying to start it with the MAF dissconnected which is on the end of the intake pipe by the air filter.dissconnect the battery for a while to clear the error codes and they will go away

Disconnected the battery for a while, and checked the codes.. No code at all now. Except 12.

Took it to a mechanic after that - he had a computer machine thingy and no codes came up.

Car is still running like a heap of junk - have replaced the leads, couldnt afford new plugs at present.
The mechanic said it could be the inlet manifold gasket (as said above) but I checked the radiator cap for white stuff - and nothing.
He also said the CAT? Could be clogged?

Ive also noticed a dark, mild liquid leak on the lhs of the motor, below the valve cover but above the spark plugs.
