Turning the aircon on also turns the fan on. The fan should turn on around 1/2 temp on low speed and about 3/4 for full speed.

So in therory turning the air con should also turn the fan on. so start the car and turn the aircon on and your radiator fan should come on.

sounds like it might be the thermostat, $40 max for a DIY job. ask you local autoparts store not super cheap for a thermostat and gasket to suit.

    So you have a V8?

If so the aircon fan mounted on the front of the grill should come on when you hit the A/C button. If it does not, then check the fan relay is operating. Otherwise, those fans have been known to work intermittently after they get a bit old. I had the same problem and after sticking a screw driver in through the front and spinning the blades the fan came to life.

But then after it would stop, it sometimes would not start again,

New ones from Holden are a no no Way too expensive so either go to the wreckers or if you can work on electric motors, pull it apart and repair it like I did.
