there was 2 different boxes in the VR's with different solinoid controls swap the memcal over into your ecu as well and you chould be fine i think but dont quote me on that there may be some wiring missing too actually

The 6hdd is out of a VS and has a slightly different wiring connector as delcowizzid says. It may fit if you can grab the wiring harness from the donor VR with the 6hdd box as it may have been modofied to fit.

it will be the late build VR which had the VS gearbox added after a certian build date.should be able to swap the engine wiring harness over and the ecu and box if it is and she will all work

Each year model has a difference.

    VR 1994 - 4HDD/V6 - 4HBD/V8 first electonically controlled auto.
VR II 1995 - 5HDD/V6 - 5HBD/V8 extra solenoid fitted to provide softer "LOCK UP" torque converter clutch apply.
VS 1996 - 6HDD/V6 - 6HBD/V8 the design of the previously added solenoid was changed and is not backwards compatible with the previous model.
VS II 1997-7HDD/V6 - 7HBD/V8 basically the same as the 1996 unit except the thread size of the cooler pipe unions was enlarged.

Although the above units may physically fit other model vehicles, the electrical differences are sufficient to cause a conflict with the computer software thus causing the unit to go into "FAILSAFE" (limp mode).

5H** units and later were equipped with the "PWM" (Pulse Width Modulation) system in order to allow the digital signals from the computer to better control the "LOCK UP" clutch system.

thats cause the S2 vr 5hdd is the same as the 6hdd pretty much both had PWM solinoids so wiring and ecu control are about the same heaps of people used to convert VS's to the VR ecu back in the day to go maffless as long as you run the tune to suit the later box its fine

Sorry to drag this thread up again, just wondering if a 6hdd will work in place of a 7hdd?
