Remember back a few months when a few of us on this forum posted details of Ryco filters apparently loosening and then dripping oil? - well today I was downtown Kalgoorlie chasing a fuel line for my daughters VT and got to talking with a salesman at one of the parts shops in Boulders St.
He mentioned that Ryco filters were now made in China instead of South Africa and he said that all the South African ones were recalled as they loosened in service...so now you know.
Hmm thats very strange!
have changed so many in my time, and NEVER seen any filters come loose? would need to fit them ultra loose for one to start leaking? Cause as you tighten the thing the oil (which you should smear on the rubber seal) wipes off as it gets tighter and forms a sort of lock, hence should be impossible to release it without a firm hand? hmmm.
Hit me up with some reputation points if i've helped you out! (Star in the bottom left!) Cheers!

Yes I know, if you get anymore manly you are in danger of making yourself pregnant!
I remember said thread.
I've done my fair share of oil changes in my time, and a fair share of them have been with Ryco filters.
I've never had any issues.
The only way I can imagine a filter would become loose is if you either didn't tighten it enough (they shouldn't be stupid tight, but reasonably hand tight (once the rubber seal makes contact you want about 1/2 to 1 full turn more), or if you didn't oil the seal, because then the seal is going to grip on the mating surface and load up, which will be putting pressure on the filter to unscrew.
People often say "product X is made in country Y", implying that country Y is dodgy (China, India, South Africa etc are often implicated in this way), but the mere fact that a product is made in China (for example) isn't any indication of it's quality. Any decent company will have quality assurance processes in place to make sure that no matter where their product is manufactured, it's done to specific standards. You should worry much more about the company and it's standards than the country of manufacture.

The only ones I have ever seen loose were old ones that haven't been changed since Noah was a boy. The seal goes hard and then they leak.
At least danja remember the thread! - the South African ones are no longer available because they self-loosened and this was not due to operator fault and were apparently recalled. Fram were also recalled recently in the U.S. They can self-loosen due to a number of design faults.
I just started this thread to say "well, that was why they leaked" and that it was not due to the user.
how long have ryco had the nuts on the top too loosen them off??..
i bought one for the old girls hilux and it had one, maybe iive just never payed that much attention to them,.
