Hey all I have a vs commodore wagon running on lpg, K&N air filter with a a lukey 2.5inch catback exhaust.
I was just wondering if I can supply a mechanic with a getrag 5spd manuel gearbox... how much could I be charged for fitting it?
I am just not digging auto right now.. but I ll probaly only do it if my autobox dies on me.
A mechanic would charge a huuuuge amount to do the conversion. There's a lot of stuffing around. Imo it's not worth it unless you can do it yourself.
AGREED...at least do as much as you can then take it and get it finished otherwise labour will be more then the conversion is worth lol
The labour would be in excess of that. The gearbox and parts would be another $1200. It is not just a matter of putting the gearbox on the motor you need Pedal box, ECU, Wiring harness and cables, Tailshaft, Gearbox X Member and of course the gearbox.
You guys didnt forget that what happens if I had already supplied the gearbox.
$700! 2 grand at a MINIMUM, even with the gear box! And that would probably be cheap! Sourcing the extra parts would be REALLY expensive.
It's not a simple matter of swap the gearbox over and everything will go, no probs. The amount of differences between manuAl and auto are many, as well as manuAl Commodores are rare as hens teeth (especially the VS's).
For begginers, look at this thread-
The complete Vn-Vr Manual Conversion Guide.
That will give you a basic rundown of the parts you will need. Even if you went through a mechanic, there's no guarantee that they would be able to source the parts.
Best bet is to get a manuAl wreck, and do the conversion yourself.
Which gear box were you planning to use if you did provide it, the T5 or the Getrag?
EDIT: saw Getrag in the first post.
Also, because you want to use the spare Getrag, you will have to find a dual mass flywheel setup (vs. solid on the S1 VS), and when parts from the Getrag setup break, they are extremely expensive to fix. A solid flywheel conversion exists, but again, expensive. If you were going to go through with this, I suggest the T5 (cable clutch) as opposed to the Getrag (hydraulic clutch), as the T5 is generally regarded as both stronger and cheaper to buy parts such as clutches for.

haha this is hilarious!$700? Mate a manual conversion even with supplying all the parts can cost anywhere upwards of $2k. $2000-$5000 is a fair price range to say. Depends very much on the mechanic.
Exactly. Conversions aren't cheap mate, it's not simply a matter of a gear box, clutch and shifter lol.
got mine done at a shop, was a complete conversion from auto to getrag box (they got the box and everything), cost me $3,600 total 3 years ago now i think. Then just last year my clutch was messing up so cost me a further $1500 for a solid flywheel and clutch :P
When i grow up... i want to be young again
Did it myself and cost me all of $750![]()
I got my old VP BT1 converted to 5speed where I supplied the gearbox, pedal box, tailshaft etc etc. On the same service they also replaced the starter motor, radiator, brake discs, brake pads, new bearings for flywheel, new heavy duty clutch, oil filter, oil etc etc and the total labour cost was $950. It was done at Midas Bass Hill a couple of years ago!!
Shop around, most mechanics quote a rediculous amount because they really CBF'd doing the job because it is pretty nasty. Worth asking around.... don't just write it off as too expensive until you ask a few different mechanics!!

I have the complete conversion kit, like everything to do it, ecu, tailshaft box n everything n i was qouted by a mechanic 800 to do the conversion on my vs. ahahaha 2000 LOL
Yeah I was gonna say. Don't know where people get this $2000 figure just for labour costs.
Mal Wood quoted me $600 labour and the car for one day, and a few local places around me were asking around the same if I could give them the complete kit. And that was for a V8.
