    Help.

I just went for a ride to the shops and something happened to my ignition.
I now cannot turn my ignition off. Motor is still running in the drive as I type this. I don't have much juice and I am worried I may damage my car.

Is there a quick way to turn the motor off?

If it's a manual you could always stall it. :P

    Otherwise I'm not real sure.

Pull the main engine relay/fuse under the bonnet.

i dunno if d/c battery would do anything?
maybe if you can reach the throttle wire in engine bay ( i dunno if these are exposed like they are on the VP) you could physically try and move it to lose position and see if it revs so low it stalls.
i really have not explained that well, but i dunno if that would work.

    sorry i dont know more.

Thanks for the suggestion Swordsy, but I am not able to do this as I know nothing about things under the bonnet.

Looks like I'll have to call the racv, big joining fee coming up. Damn.

Oh well, at least I was able to lock it and pick up a slab while at the shops.

Black box right behind the battery, remove the lid from the sides and it'll have a pic to show you what is what.

No drama's, but now you need to find out why it didn't turn off with the key. that could be the tricky part.

It is like the whole bit where the key goes was loose and not responding at all. No matter which way I turned the key full on nothing would happen.

I think I see a big bill coming up.

edit: BTW I love your panel van. Is that a HQ with a hj? front end.
I did a lot of kicking around in the 80's in a HQ panel van

Have a poke around and see if you can find any loose electrical connectors near that fise box or under the steering wheel, it could be that simple. (hopefullly..)

She's a full HZ, nearly the same body (slight differences) and the front end ran from hj - hz, just with a different grill. Got GTS Guards and a gts front to go on it tho

the pin retaining the ignition barrel could have gone walk about? or the ignition barrel is stuffed.

you can get a full set from a wrecker for around $80 im told, and its not that hard to fit.

I had this with my VS, the shaft that goes into the ignition switch (from the barrel) snapped. Removed the fuel pump relay then disconnected the battery.

Remove the barrel and the switch at the rear of the barrel, and remove the left over shaft from the switch. Replace the barrel, and all should be fine.

If you leave the barrel in and remove the rotary switch at the end, you can start your car with a screwdriver (insert into rotary switch and turn). The key has to be in, and in the 'run' position, to bridge the contacts on your key etc.

    Hey all,
    thanks for the help.

I am not mechanically minded so I will not be able to do this. Being a one car family we really need to have the car working.
I'm getting a mobile mechanic out this morning.
Will cost a fortune but I really have no other option.

    cheers

i would advise NEVER to disconnect battery first as the the voltage from the alternator needs to go some where and if you disconnect battery its gonna most likely burn out your wiring!

Disconecting the battery with the engine running can overload the alternator and fry it.Dont do it.
