Don't need a puller, you just need to wiggle it for about 2 minutes straight, have some patients. It will come of no problems. When i was taking mine of on the VH (27 year old car now) it took me 5 minutes (of wiggling it side to side and pulling on it) to get it of. My VR wasn't as bad but don't get a puller you can get it of with your hands.

I presume you don't have airbags. If not, have someone pull on the steering wheel, while you tap on the shaft with a hammer, make sure you put the nut back on so you don't damage the thread.

Hence the reason I suggested a puller.

I'm with you there; using a puller makes it much easier (and safer). This is especially so if the retaining nut has been overtightened or thread locking compound dripped down into the splines.

For future reference and for any one else who searches the subject later, screwing the nut back on a couple of threads will prevent the possibility of damage to the head (and Oakleys).

Rufus, it's not really a great idea to tap the end of the shaft with a hammer, nut or no, as it's a collapsible column and you can cause damage to it by hitting on it.

easiest way by far is to jus hold it with both hands one on each side and jus rock it forward and back if yu get my drift.. no damage to anything takes bout 30secs and cost nothing

A puller is the easist way and ensures you don't break anything. I've got 2 steering wheel pullers one was for my VN and the other was to suit a VR steering wheel that I put on my VN to replace the huge one they came with and both were home made, they are simple to do you just need a few bolts, nuts a bit of shet steel and a grinder. On the VR wheel the puller doesn't screw in it has to have a hook on each rod/bolt that hooks onto the bottom of the holes in the wheel whereas the VN's you use bolts that go into threads.
