hey ive searched the forums and cant find anything similar so here goes..
i want to re trim my parcel tray, as in put new material on it..
ive just finished retrimming my hoodlining in black material and made sure i bought enough to have enough left over to cover my parcel tray if i decide to use it but ive tried peeling back the old carpet material a bit and it doesnt really peel off as ive eheard someone say earlier it more just rips the material off the parcel tray itself apart so i was wondering if i could jus get some spray adhesive and spray the carpet then lay down the material or put some foam underneath the material so its a reasonably flat surface.. any1 have any hints or tips? any help is great..
I've done it in mine. I pulled the original carpet off since I was building up the speakers a little with fibreglass and as you said, it pulled the parcel shelf material apart a little.
I trimmed mine in the same velour I used on the headlining, and that already had a foam backing, so that helped a little with making everything level but it still isn't perfect.
I guess you could just stick it over the top, but even if you did that I'd be using the foam backing

Another option, depending on how game you are, is to fabricate an entirely new parcel shelf... Out of MDF or even fiberglass, then stick your material to that. I've seen Philthy's, and didn't see any problems with it... Maybe just carefully remove that material, and fix up any damage you do with fiberglass? Or f***ton of duct tape![]()
Not sure about VS's, but VN/VP parcel shelfs just crumble apart lol.
I wouldnt mind making an MDF shelf to mount speakers on it, but how do you shape it ie. high mount stop light? Havnt done alot of woodworking.![]()
Depending on what kind of shapes you want... MDF or fiberglass. I've seen a high mount stop light, that looked very stock (may have been?) on a custom shelf in a VP... It was like the current one, but on a pedestal.
MDF is easy to use to be honest, you cut it up and glue or screw it back together. A jigsaw is really the only power tool you need to do most things... Fiberglassing is a little more tough, you need a fair amount of time if you want to do a good job... And you'll probably want a router as well as the previously mentioned jigsaw.
Combining fiberglass and mdf tends to be the best option. Make the base out of mdf, make some mounts for whatever you want with mdf peices (sort of like a frame). Stretch material over the mounts, and staple it down... Get it to curve into the shape you want. Cover it with resin, let it dry, add some CSM (Chopped sheet matting... Basically fiberglass fibers), more resin, more csm, more resin, repeat until it's strong enough. You may need some filler if there are some really bad spots, and sand back some raised bits... Then cover with your fabric.
Philthy didn't quite do the above. As far as i know, he made some speaker rings, raised them a bit on one side, and fiberglassed them in place... Then re-covered the shelf. Upside to this is less work than recreating the whole shelf, downside is you can't entirely shape it how you want to.
Cheers Fonzie, this is one of the only pics I took while building mine:
That was after the 1st or 2nd coat of fibreglass, and I made it before I really knew what I was doing, so if you were to do it like this I suggest stretching a piece of material over the "pod" to give you the basic shape and fibreglassing that. (Like Fonzie said)
Next time I would probably make an MDF one and then make similar fibreglass pods on top, and maybe fibreglass the brake light in as well.
My housemate recently made one for his 'rolla out of MDF, cut down some 6x9 boxes and stuck them on, then fibreglassed the edges to make them smooth and rounded, then glued foam and vinyl over the top. I'll see if he took any photos while building that

sweet cheers every1 i was thinking bout making a new one out off mdf myself but i dnt really have the space or time to do it so i think my best option is probably just to put some off my left over foam from the hoodlining on there then lay down the material.
i really would like to get the carpet off first might try it again from another corner soon haha
correct me if I'm wrong, but the problem with making a new parcel tray for VS is that on the sides of the tray it goes down at an angle to level with the small rear windows, where VP-VN parcel tray is pretty much flat?
you could do what i did, just spray paint it blackblends in nicely and everyone thinks its the black velvet that i have in the interior. the only difference is that the fabric is abit stiffer. but in reality, how much time are people gonna be looking at the parcel tray? hence spray painting it instead.
yer HRVATSKI_VOJNIK you are ryt it does go down and an angle on the sides and at the front, if i had the time and space im sure id be able to make one up 2 fit but i just dnt and even then wouldnt want 2 bother making one unless it was gonna be a fully custom job but yer.. i thought bout jus painting it but thought it my come out a bit dodgy but if you say its fine i myt try it as well then if it dnt work i could alwais cover it after lol
VN/P also has it angled down sides and at the front. Also the sides where the speakers sit are higher than the rest of the shelf.
Thanks for the info guys. Looks like a bit of effort. Maybe one day![]()
Yeah the slope would probably be a problem, regarding making a new one... Thinking the best option would be, rip the original out... Cut the center (big flat bit) out of it and replace it with MDF... Cover the whole thing in resin and CSM, and go nuts.
