Works fine for me, i have an aftermarket Impco system.
hey just wondering if anyone else has dual fuel (non ex taxi) and how does it perform
Works fine for me, i have an aftermarket Impco system.
I've had a fair bit of trouble with the gas. It tends to backfire under load, and that can lead to all kinds of problems under the bonnet (eg blowing your air mass meter to pieces)
No matter how regularly you get your car tuned and serviced it still backfires. I'm pretty sure I've heard of other VS's having similar backfiring issues.
All things considered though, the gas is great at times like now, when petrol prices are through the roof![]()
Yea i've had the a few little problems like jerome_boy with backfiring.
Turned out to be a gas leak, got that fixed and no dramas since...
Performance side of things? there is a noticable drop in power BUT nothing too dramatic.
I'm definately glad i have it with the petrol prices these days, and me being on a tight budget as most uni students are, i wouldnt be able to run my car without it![]()
annnnd what type of oil do you use do you have to get the lpg oil yer or can i use normal oils cheeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrssss
Gas setups are better suited with Pod Filters instead of the stock air box setup, that will solve your backfiring problem.
there is a good thread in teh VK section on this. pros and cons etc.
I got a 5L duel fuel vs calais its goes quite well on gas, but this is due to taking the car to gas research once every six months and getting it tuned right those guys are the gods when it comes to gas.Originally Posted by samoht
I added gas to my car (VS 1995) within 4 weeks of buying it. Have the gas side serviced regularly, and it hasn't skipped a beat. Awesome cars on gas. No backfiring problems, except when I had to replace the crank angle sensor, but that's not the gas systems fault.
If you get quotes, cheapest is not necessarily the best. Do your homework. But whatever you do, get gas!
Yeah, my VR's on gas. Had a heap of backfiring problems, till I upgraded the plugs and leads, and haven't had a problem since.

The plugs were rather fouled, and the leads were getting old, so I replaced them with Bosch Sports leads. Huge difference. Misfire went away, car felt a hell of a lot smoother. Just better all round.

My VS s1 ex i just got converted the other week. Shes going good though missing a little bit i took it back and she was just running a bit lean but shes ok now. Its so much cheaper im saving 30 to 35 bucks a week!! same as everyone else has said only a little change in power
My VS is on gas. Performs fine. Mine goes harder on gas than petrol. And its certainly an advantage in terms of fuel costs. Be prepared to get heads done tho. Ecotec heads aren't set up for gas and will need to get stainless seats fitted down the track.
I run my 305 - gas for daily driving & optimax for track... have no probs at all either way.
1968 Pontiac GTO
jerome_boy maybe your car is running too rich...unburnt fuel in exhaust means kaboomy
i had a big problem with backfiring on my VR after ages of trying to fix it worked out it was either the plugs or the leads so replace both got special gas plugs and covered the new leads with plastic tubing to stop cross firing which causes backfiring and hasnt done it in 5 tanks of gas![]()

I am thinking of converting my VS to LPG. When I purchased the car a few years back from the dealer they recommended against it.
From what I have read in these forums, it seems there are not many problems at all as long as the job is done properly.
If the above work on the heads needs to be done: How soon after the conversion would this need to be done? Is there a set time or something like that.
Any help appreciated.

ive been having a few probs with mine still am but its due for the 10 year inspection ive changed the heads got them from repco for $550 the pair change over
1st pic old head
2nd pic new head
Gas suddenly looks very tempting with the new government rebate. $2000 for anyone that hasnt heard. Meaning it will only cost about $500. You should make the $ back within a few months. But there is at least a month wait by the sounds of it, if not 2, to get it installed.
What about full gass conversions?
We all know you loose power with a duel setup, but what if you went for gas only, surely then you'd be able to tune the car to take advantage of the gas, Doesn't it run a higher octane ? anyone with just gas care to share there results
i only just read in the paper this morning that people have been cashing in on changing there cars over to gas in WA. it said that we get $2000 federal govt rebate but then also get a state govt rebate of $1000. a cheap conversion would set you back somewhere in the $2500 region and you walk out with $500 in your pocket, and what your going to save on fuel. pity the waiting list is so long!

Unless something is out there that corrects it, the problem is that the V6 fires all cylinders until about 600 RPM (?) on startup. Because gas is mixed with air at the plenum chamber, it can lead to the mother of all backfires..Originally Posted by proto_vr

I converted my VS at 120k, its now done 255k. I have not touched the engine or run an upper cylinder lubricant. All I do is run the car 20kms a week on petrol.Originally Posted by gnol
All backfires (about 5) have been results of lead/plug failure.
I say go for it :-)
