    Default VS vs. VR

Just interested to see what people think of the two different models,

They are so alike outside but yet so different under the hood. I know that VS engines have more KW's than VR engines, however what have people actually experienced? What is the real, rear wheel kws of these?

    Cheers.

The ol' Buick 3.8 litre V6's (VN - VR) seem to have a bit more low down torque than the Ecotec's. Not sure about rwkw. I'd guess in the vicinity of 115rwkw - 120rwkw for the Buick very roughly......?

VR was the car I grew up knowing, so I prefer it simply for that reason. The VS isnt special to me.

As far as V6's go for sounding ok with exhausts, i'd go a Buick V6 over an Ecotec.

They sound a bit different between each other with Pacies and a 2.5" catback.

Depends what you are after for the car.
The buicks feel a bit punchier down low, and often sound better with the right exhaust, but aren't as smooth as ecotecs, and afaik the ecotecs are a bit easier to get some power out of

I know I own one, but ecotecs sound soooo much ****ing better than buicks....they have a nice 6 sound to them, even in the high revs if you have extractors and a good exhaust they have a "fast note"...buicks eh i dont know...they just sound the same as they do standard but louder when they have exhausts if that makes sense haha ... from what I've heard off mates' vr's anyway...as for the power they put out...it would be determined on how healthy the motor is and the mods they have, as these things are to old now to go off factory specs...

The ecotec sound better I'm 100% sure in the top end. They sound much more alive higher in the rev range (which they are), especailly in the later VY twin cat versions.

The VR is probably faster to 100 most of the time stock, but the ecotec has nicer heads and so responds much better to modifications. The early motor is a little bit stronger. As for outright power the VR V6 is around 105 rwkw and the VS anywhere from 105 to 115 (the early motor is stronger down low)

At this day and age i dont really think theres much of a difference between them.

At my last dyno day i made 112.8rwkw with CAI and cat-back. I beat a few VS's at the 108-100rwkw mark and a few VS's beat me at around 114-118rwkw.

Since then ive added a foamy tune, advance extractors and magnaflow cat. Stock power means jack shit.

As for sound, its all up to personal preference. I prefer the buicks meater note then a ecotecs almost 'tuner' sounding top end, but even that all depends on the exhaust setup you go

in my opinion keep your options for both.. it's all down to personal prefference no huge difference either way... have a good look around, find a good deal and buy it..

    cheers

from what i know, the ecotec is a harder revving motor, so if that suits ya style the ecotecs the gun, my mate has a VR ute and he is on his 2nd motor, the bottom end let go...long story short that was a hard way to learn ...

I have both variants. Both manual, both with full exhausts, both fully tuned to the max.

When my VS was stock with full exhaust my best fuel av was down to 11.8L/100 on a normal week (around town). My VN with similar mods can only do a best of 12.7L/100 on that same weekly trip.

    Performance wise..
-buick has better 'pull' under approx 3k rpm, ecotec is way better mid to upper rpms.
-Ecotec just seems more comfortable/ smooth to rev hard, where the buick doent feel as at ease.
-Buick has that roughness to the note that i like. with my ecotec i put a big cam in it to make it sound angry.
-Ecotec throttle response is stacks better, buick being a lot lazier just off idle.

The only thing similar between these two engines is the 3.8L capacity. They are so different in many ways.

Overall they both have pros and cons, but as said... personal preference! For me, i lean slightly to ecotec just a more refined package.
Hit me up with some reputation points if i've helped you out! (Star in the bottom left!) Cheers!
