Unhappy motor oil leaking bad from bellhousing - help

Hi everyone ive had trouble with my auto replaced some seals, filter and fluid. just put the gearbox back in and started the motor after about 3 - 5 min (idle) i noticed a smell it was oil dripping out off the bellhousing on to the exhaust and it just kept getting worse.
the oil is black & runny the motor is due for a oil change could this be the problem

My dad said maybe its cause the front was up on ramps for ages and the oil in the motor went towards the back
    i dunno

(it didnt do this before i took the gearbox out)
    Any ideas welcome

sounds like its leaking out your rear main seal on the crank. Did you touch anthing around there when you were playing with the box ?

if its the rear main, just take the box out and do the seal if its not the rope type, you could try some real thick stuff to slow it down, but its a bit of a quick fix and if its that bad, it wont work anyway.

there are plenty of stop leak products for engines...and the thickest oil I would use is 20W60 but its not going to help much...

If the engine is in decent condition besides the leak, DON'T use stop leak, It clogs the system to a point where the oil is like a slush, it will cause more friction in the engine and is no good for cams and...well anything in the car. Once the heat is up, it will probably leak just as much. Get the leak fixes. Stop leak is just like a chemweld for engines, its a quickfix which will cost more in the future if you are keeping the car. I used it in the last engine just to get me by a couple of months and it went downhill quicker than ever.

Penrite HPR 30 is 20W60, or look for an oil that claims to be for old engines , they are usually quite thick too. but remember its going to do sweet fa. nothing will block a leak if there's a gaping hole in your gasket. Get under it and get some silastic into it.
