I need to get my distributor back in the right spot in my 5L...I've read my manual and as much on the forums as I can but I have had 3 cracks at it and still no action. There are no marks to show where it goes back in because when i took the old one out it was loose and turned in my hand when i was toying with it.
Before anyone suggests other problems that could be the cause I am 100% certain that everything else in the ignition system is fine, because I have replaced it all trouble shooting in the first place, the problem in the end was part of the wiring loom being squashed between the gearbox and engine. All the wires have been fixed up...and all the other work i've done on the ignition was unnecessary but all the same its all new.
This has been a long ass project trying to get this beast off defect and back on the road and im kinda at my wits end so any advice would be much appreciated.
On my last attempt I turned the crank clockwise till air pushed past my finger on #1 cylinder cuz the paper method didn't work for me, the marks on the balancer were nowhere near the top and they were somewhere between 90 and 180 out.
Will air only come out of the spark plug hole once in a rotation of the crank? So if I feel air im at the right spot? Should I turn it further if so how far?
When putting the dizzy back in im trying to get the rotor button to sit just before #1 should I be aiming for right on top of #1? and does the rotor button spin clockwise?
Car is still in so many pieces...I just know as soon as I hear the roar of that exhaust my worries will fade away and it will all seem so much closer to completion...Please help!
Tip: plug the hall sensor back in.
At least its farting through the exhaust now...
still need to get it back out again and have another crack.
when you turn the crank and the number 1 piston is coming up to TDC on compression, you'll have no hope of holding the pressure back. you might feel some air coming out when its coming up to TDC on exhaust, but you want it so there tons of pressure.
if you set the balancer mark at TDC, and you set the rotor button right on #1, it should go. then get a timing light and check it in diagnostic mode to set correct timing.
edit: yeah plugging that back in might help somewhat... overlooking the obvious, happens to me all the time.

Tried it again and I've got air coming out when the balancer mark is right where its meant to be, so i've lined it up on the big mark between a and r...now to the dizzy, again...
On a side note, my missus is gonna be pissed at how dirty her laptop is lawl.
Should I just be starting it/trying to start it in diagnostics mode anyway? I've just left the terminal thingies earthed from ages ago when I was trouble shooting it.
it wanted to start that time...still backfiring though gonna check all the leads make sure they're all in order before i think about doing it over again
lol @ my 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 firing order...its been a long day...sheesh
Quick smoke while the battery charges a bit more and I think I might be in business
gone from backfire and trying to start to not a lot of action at all, and all I did was put the plugs in the right order on the dizzy...... back to the drawing board for a 5th attempt at top dead centre and dizzy on #1
We have ignition. Now to search for a good timing guide.
nice. bet it was the best sound in the world to hear it run
Like u wouldn't believe. It got defected 12 months ago, broke down within the 72 hour defect notice, fair way to go to get it worth taking over the pits but hearing her purrr makes it all worth while
