Hi there - I have to replace my 93 VR's Auto as is it slipping badly and the wrecker asked if it is a 5H or 4H - the plate says M30 - any clues on how I can tell what it is?
On the passinger side of the bellhouseing there is a sticker .If u cant read that its stamped just above the drivers side rear of the oil pan
Hi i figured i'll just post in this thread rather than make my own.
I've gotta do the same on my 93 vr, i'm looking at a vs box that's either a 6H or a 7H and i hear the wiring may be different.
How do i go about making the vs box compatible with my vr?
Also how can i take some trans fluid out of my current gearbox?
i accidentally overfilled it when it started playing up, i now generally have about 10-20 seconds of what gears i have left (R & 3rd) before it slips back into neutral and since it's in a shitty position i have to put it in park and afterwards cannot get it out of park for several hours.. as in i have to leave it turned off for a day before it'll let me go into gears again.
I know you can take the fluid out. Should be a plug somewhere on or around the pan of the box. I dont know you may have to suck it out with syringe. Gearbox servicing kits are available, so i suppose you might even want to look at that.
Good luck with the compatibility quest...
No sump plugs on the auto's. Have to take the entire pan off.
How are you checking your gearbox fluid? While it's on/off, warm/cold, in gear/neutral?
Transmission Fluid
Give that a read before you try draining fluid.
Yeah checked it properly after a quick drive through town after filling and it was overfilled, haven't really checked it properly since it stopped moving.
It was looking and smelling like it's burning from repeated attempts to get it home when i checked it yesterday haha.
Another que?, exhuast manifolds on ecotecs don't fit on buicks do they?
If not...umm
Whats everyone think of turning my vr into a vs with a full engine+gearbox swap?lol
ok, to answer ur first post, the VR buicks have a sticker [which falls of due to excessive heat] that is printed as a 4HDD for the S1/2 93/94 VR..
the 5HDD came out in the last of the VR sedan/wagons....
do what i did, and scratch/ stamp 4HDD into the case so ya will never know..
and i wouldnt bother doin a VS emotec convo. unless ur gonna change the computer, bcm, wiring harness etc etc..
to extratx excess fluid, undo the hoses at the radiator, hold them into a bucket/ drain or oil pan, get someone to start the car for ya, and drain the amount ya want outta the box that way..
hook the lines back to the radiator, and its good to go.![]()
I'm looking at a written off vs as a donor car, although i'm thinkin swapping it all out would still be alot of hassle/expense.
Yeah might just wreck it..
Thanks, never crossed my mind to open up the line to the radiator but would it actually help it shift again or would the damage already be done?
The tcc valve doesnt let any fluid through to the radiator until the torque converter is locked up.Maybe just rip the dipstick tube out.
when my wagon box went i couldn't find the sticker either.. instead i looked from the drivers side onto the bell housing and i could see a corner of something sticking up.. it was the sticker but was cover in that much crap you couldn't see it from the passenger side.. just have a really good look..
M30 just means it's an auto
cheers
I don't stay with my my wife for love, spite really, i won't leave her cause that'll make her happy!!

Sorry don't know where my head was at... although i think somewhere in here there is a post from a guy who bought a 2nd pan from the wreckers, took it to some sort of steel fabrication place and for next to no bucks, got a plug welded to it. Pretty nifty I thought. Maybe thats where my head was...lol I will try find it again and post the link.
couldn't find that one specifically but found a "how to" for servicing that gives it a mention or two - VN-VS Gearbox Fluid and Filter Change (Auto)
