Hello everyone,
I am hearing a loud clanging noise from my motor when its at operating temperature it doesn't make the noise when it is cold.
When it is cold there is no noise, its a vr calais series 1 with a Buick motor, just wondering what it could be, I have checked all pulleys and replaced the idler pulley still no luck any ideas?
cheers guys.
here is a video of it sorry about the quality.

Sounds like a bad pulley bearing - try removing your fanbelt and turn each pulley by hand - if one is gone it will feel rough or loose. Also have a close look at the harmonic balancer when the engine is idling and see if it's wobbling. Good Luck.
hello, checked all pulleys no noise or play and replaced the idler pulley, Balancer is fine and not wobbling so im stumped as to what it could be. cheers.
Did you try running the engine with the belt disconnected to rule out pulleys etc? - only run for 5 or 10 seconds as it will overheat quick!
Hi dude it will be the needle roller bearings in the balancer shaft that sits in the valley looks KINDA like a cam shaft had the same noise in mine a pain in the ass!
How did you go about fixing the noise sgt santa?
and hako i tried running the engine without the belt there was no noise but the engine was cold so thats probably why it didn't make the noise.
take off the manifold and timing cover theres no chain for it it runs off the cam gear remove the shaft and i put on a double row timing chain.
would it throw the engine out of balance? and could this noise be the timing chain? cheers.
Before playing with the balance shaft I'd try the belt removal with the engine hot - eliminate the simple things first.
May also be a crack or leak in an exhaust manifold (opens when hot) or a loose driveplate.
sounds like a cracked manifold? Have you made yourself an ear trumpet and tried to locate the noise?
I like VS Caprices so much, I bought 2... and a WH Grange!
Ill take the car to an exhaust joint and get them to check for cracks in the manifold so i can rule that out see how I go, I hope its nothing major. cheers
with mine it made that same noise but it was coming from the back of the motor so i knew it wasnt timing chain. my mate from pro stroke said its a common problem with those engines. the balance shaft purely balances out harmonic vibrations caused by the weird firing order in a v6 apparantly.....
Definitely sounds like metal on metal. Maybe piston slap. Have you checked whether all the rockers are bolted down right?
went to a mechanic and he thinks it is the timing chain, how much am i looking at to get this done?
