    Unhappy vs commodore overheating

    just after some advice!

my 1996 vs commodore v6 manual doesnt want to stay cool.
all of a sudden it has just stated heatin up over half way on the temp gauge.
i was told maybe the thermostat and a raditor fulsh would help but niethier have work so far.

just took it for a drive and whenever i stop at the the light it jumps up to half and when i turn it off and the radiator cap isnt even warm.

praying its not a head gasket!!!!

    ne ideas??
whats a price to get a head gasket fixed?

It may be normal. Commodores usually run at around 1/4 to 1/2.....then when you stop at the lights with no airflow thru the radiator the temp gauge rapidly climb up to 3/4 when the fan will cut in and temp will drop fairly rapidly to 1/2 or less.
If it was overheating the engine would smell very hot, you would be using coolant plus whenever you switched the motor off coolant would probably be forced out of the overflow tank. So hopefully it is OK.

check your fan is working on both high and low speeds, and try bleeding air out of cooling system using the bleed valve on top of the thermostat housing.

When it is ''over heating'' pop the bonnet and squeeze the top rad hose does it feel really hard and burning to touch or just hot and you can squeeze it a bit if so it is fine if it is very hard and burning it is over heated if it is very hard and cold you have a blockage somewhere
PS sorry for the grammer im tired

It's normal in certain situations as described as above...

Ecotec's do like to heat up to about 3/4 before the fan kicks in and the temp will rapidly go down.

mine used ot get real warm in just the same way, and i was told it was a head gasket, but i turned out i had a hairline crack in the top radiator hose connection on the tank. $100 for new one on ebay
    sorted

apparently its pretty common coz they are plastic end tanks or somthing
