Default little help with bolting up the trans

hey guys, i just dropped in a new motor, its bolted to the engine mounts now.

but as it stands, the bellhousing is a couple of mm from the block, so i bolted it back up hoping it would fix it but all it did was crack the bellhousing, because i believe it was on top of the passanger side block to gearbox locator and when force was applyed to the other side of the block, it forced it to part ways.

its fine i just need to get the gearbox closer to the block, but i am unsure as to how i would go about it :\

EDIT: This is on a VR SII V6 to 5HDD trans.

did you slide the torque converter into the box and turn it till you got it to click back into the box 3 times to locate on all the splines and the pump drive if not you may have pushed the pump into the auto which is bad as well

yeah i kept turning it, pushing it at the same time, and turning it some more, untill it got to where it is now.

its not bolted up, i bolted the converter the the flex plate and then fitted it to the gearbox via the engine crane.

its just its a couple of mm out and it should be flush with the block

never fit the engine with the torque converter on the flex plate it should allways be pushed all the way in the box ide say you are most likely pushing the insides of the box into itself which will smash the pump out the trans if it hasnt all ready which will be major

    awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww fffffffuccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkk off.

I'm starting to think something is up, because the bottom of the box was lower down the bottom, so i jacked it up to even it up, and now i go to crank the engine by hand, and after a couple of clunks at one spot, small ones, it wont crank over no more :S

undo the 3 bolts holdeing the torque converter on slide the converter off the flexplate and slide it right into the box while turning it till it bottoms out against the gearbox then bolt up the trans and hope for the best

Here I refer to the post in the other thread suggesting that the TC should be left in the trans. or better yet the trans. and engine removed together and shake head slowly.

    cheers anyway mate.

I have the gearbox dropped out now, it seems it should be good for re-welding so ill try and get a mobile welder in and get it sorted.

Any idea's of prices for mobile welders (not even an hours work ) and the price of a second hand gear box (5HDD)

    thanks heaps guys.

dunno on prices, any tig welding I get done is usually paid back in hours of my own effort or in beer.

    Dont mean to be rude
but why didnt u just bolt the tranny to the engine while it was out and dropped the whole thing in?
we did that on my brothers car, had to angle it a bit to get the whole lot in but didnt have nay many dramas

good lessons are always hard learnt. The first engine I ever pulled out, undone the g'box bolts, totally disregarded the flywheel cover and pulled like crazy. No - It didn't come out lol

Sorry Guys I didn't mean to hijack this thread but i have to admit that I did the same thing bolting the engine and gearbox together on the floor with the torque converter already connected to the flex plate. The car wouldn't drive (laboring, chugging and then no drive) very well at all when started so I disconnected the torque converter and undid the gearbox enough to slide backwards so that i could manouvre the torque converter in to the correct position. My problem now is that when the gearbox is bolted up the torque converter actually sits about 5 to 10 mm away from the flex plate.
How do you tell if the pump has been pushed into the gearbox without going to the effort of putting it all back together. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mate buy a gregorys manual . Instructions are all step by step, you cant go wrong. It would have paid for itself already. What you have done is easily done anyway.I got caught out years ago ,same thing. But I got told about it before I tried to pull it up with the bolts.(which was what I was gonna do to.)it was a V8 Falcon and C4 auto.Thinking of that takes me back, jeez I miss the days when radar detectors were allowed.

I got caught with that one too. You need to slip the TQ into the gearbox fully then rotate it till it slides in a bit further indicating it has found where the tangs are. (that was with a Valiant and Falcon but all are the same). Someone else may be able to explain it better.

Hako is right, what he says is exactly what has to be done before its bolted up, if you have it right you will notice the engine /trans will go together without having any bolts in.
