i have a 96 series 2 v6 commodore and i replaced the tensioner pully yesterday and drove it probably 10 to 15 kays before the belt shredded itself now it will not start just winds over i have replaced the belt checked the fuses and still does not start and when stop winding it over it makes a grinding noise
Check the harmonic balance pulley - it's possible that it is on it's way out with the rubber disintegrating - this allows it to hit the timing cover and/or the crank angle sensor (which tells the ECU when to fire the plugs)

had a look couldn't see rubber disinegrating and while i had it on the stands noticed there was oil at the back of the motor and the front of the gear box couldnt see where it was actually coming from
getting another harmonic balancer and tensioner pully assembly tomorow as bent the tabs on the harmonic balancer as they were bent and a new c.a.s went in today
Thanks for posting the fix.
did you or a mech do the harmonic balancer
i put the harmonic balancer back onto the car as the car was on my neighbors yard not at a mechanics they just removed it for me there is some vibrations through it now so going to take it to a mechanic tomorrow and get it checked over for me to make sure it is all done properly and if needing i just have to wait for the harmonic balancer off my mates vt as i am claiming parts off one of them he owns and another question how hard is it to put the vt front brake setups onto a vs
sorry i can help with that, i dont imagine it would be that difficult... someone will reply soon.
or you could try google it :P
