i was surfing the net for CAI for vr's and i came across this homemade setup. the owner has cut a hole through the bottom of the plastic airbox, then through the metal and attached a 3" pipe from the air duct (where the fog light goes). i thought how does he not get heaps of crap in there then i saw he has put gauze wire or flyscreen on it to filter crap out. he claims the gains to be pretty good! what do you guys think
i've seen it done to alot of vl's mate, worked a treat .
brother done it to his vl was a peice of piss and probably the best cai you can put in, better then them otr ones you get for the 6 banger vr/vs's i put one on both of my vs's and didnt notice any difference, pretty sure foamy swears by going through the bottom of the airbox and to the bumper and ide take his word for it so ide say it is the best way

Yeah morton has done this with his stato, He used fly screen on the front as far as i know. Speaking in terms of physics, it's POSSIBLE for your car to swallow a puddle with this method... But highly unlikely. I think you should be safe![]()
obviously you'd keep the factory intake hole in the front, so if you did drive through a puddle or something, water being heavier than air it would suck through the hole without the water. sure you may get a few drops still from the front bar intake, but it wouldn't be any more damaging than driving in rain with an OTR. they're a very good idea, kinda like a ram intake, but i'd look into the legalities of cutting through the guard before you grab the hacksaw

I swear I've heard someone say there's already a hole under the airbox in the VR/VS... That could be a figment of my imagination though.

Imagination it is then. I haven't been drinking, Really, I'm at work. Working. *cough*.
any one ssen my pants? i think i left them at your mums
ok so mine has a small hole he size of 1/2 socket in the bottom.
I have done this on mine, And it works well - but I have an inspection coming up, so I have to pull it out and somehow patch the hole.
I have a whole K&N pod filter under there! I clean it once every about 3 months, doesnt get very dirty. Its about 30 cm's long and definately wouldnt go near a puddle unless it was flooding. You'll probably have to relocate your water washer bottle, but if you dont want to cut a hole, use the hole from the washer bottle.
my factory airbox has a hole the size of a ten cent peice... dont know bout cutting into the metal though would anyone else do it??
i done it to my brothers vl but there is no way i would go near my caprice with a hole saw straught through the metal just to get some cold air lol, i would like to but **** thatwoulda done it on my old vs depends how much you value your car i geuss

The only hole in that flat section is the hole that the filler tube for the washer bottle pokes through. I did this CAI on my old VP, but used a 90MM holesaw to cut through the steel. You gotta be pretty accurate, as there isn't enough room for error on that flat section. Trace out a 90MM hole with a black texta, THEN cut it.
Make sure the holesaw doesn't slip through and hack up your tyre either. I'd remove your tyre first too, just in case.
