Check your filler pipe (or whatever it's called).
Check the sender unit gasket isn't leaking.

Look for anything that may indicate a fuel leak.

No, If it only smells when its full, you need to check the fuel line under the car that leads to the charcoal canister in the engine bay, its only plastic shit from the factory and they crack and split all the time. This is where the extra vapour from the fuel tank goes, if its broken, the fumes will go all through the cabin.

You may need to take the tank off though, so run it to empty. (not completely)

This may not be the case, but it is worth checking.
Our VNSS had the big tank replaced with the smaller tank, but they didn't change the straps.
When the tank was full, i would get this fuel smell occasionally.

What had happened was, because the tank wasn't clamped up properly, it was sliding around.
The entire top of the tank had rusted & collapsed inside. Effectively leaving the whole top of the tank exposed.
There was no fuel leaking, no signs of anything wrong. The thing was a ticking time bomb!

    It's worth checking.
