    Default Crack in gearbox

hey guys, i got a 5HDD gearbox at home with a crack from the top of the drivers side locater pin hole, and down across the top of the gearbox, its about 200mm long.

wont be able to get some good pics untill the weekend sometime.

I was just wondering if this could be welded back together?

I assume you mean just along the bell housing..? if so i dont see why you could not get it welded but i would try and have it bolted to a block when you had it done as to prevent any troubles when trying to reinstall

the bell housings are not really able to be welded with much success. the alloy used in them are not of the best quality for welding as they are very porus and tend to break again after a very short time. if you decide to have it welded the bellhousing needs to be absolutley spotless as if there is any old dirt or oil around the area to be welded it will run into the weld when heated up. it would also need to be done by someone that is very competent in alloy welding and needs to be done with a tig welder. im an engineer and welder by trade btw. at the end of the day its your choice but would be very wary about doing this.

    Thanks for your comments guys.

I was thinking, at the end of the day, if its going to cost more to hire a welder then it is to get another second hand 5HDD, I may as well get that.
