Try and locate exactly where the noise is coming from - possibles are brake caliper dragging, handbrake shoes dragging, badly worn universal joints or even a pebble caught in the brake pad. They'd all be cheaper than a new complete rearend.

Maybe it's the centre bearing that's gone as it will give a grinding noise when the pedal is down. You will have to do a process of elimination - first thing I'd do is disconnect the universal joint from the diff (4 bolts) and then try and turn the diff pinion by hand - if the diff's shot you will feel the roughness. Same with the tailshaft - put the car in N and rotate the shaft feeling for roughness.
Alternatively you could jack up one rear wheel and rotate it with the trans in N and feel for roughness.
Ultimately it's your call to do these checks....otherwise all the suggestions you'll get from this forum will be to no avail.
    Good Luck.
