VR Senator air con problem

Mate's VR Senator 215i, here's the symptoms:

• air con has minimal to no effect
• when you turn on AC in the climate control unit, a horrendous smell comes through.. like rotten eggs or something fairly noxious
• air con compressor has a large amount of black soot around it externally, all over surrounding block, rail etc

reckon this sounds like just a compressor change, or something more serious?

Regarding the smell; have you checked the evaporator drain tubes to make sure that they aren't blocked?

nope, will do that; I doubt it's that though, it smells like a burning sort of odour

Sounds like the seal has gone in the front of the compressor allowing gas and oil to leak out. That will cost upwards of $800 to fix unfortunately as most places suggest a new compressor, oil and gas..

Yeah a new compressor would be OK. we'd get the car degassed, install the new compressor ourselves and then get it all fluided up again
