Probably being too rough lol. The vents are screwed to the back of the dash surround. It would take some force to break them off. Undo the 2 screws and carefully pull the surround out and there they are.

I had exactly the same problem. I had a fascia that had two large cracks in it from previous owners that had screwed a mobile phone holder onto it. I wanted to replace it, so I pulled my dash fascia out extremely carefully but still broke one of the tabs off. The the screw holes for the centre vents disintegrated as I pulled it out. When I went to the wreckers to get a another fascia, the attachment points were all in worse condition than the one I pulled out. After a while I got sick of looking so I forked out the $100 and bought a new one from Holden.

Maybe the plastic gets brittle over time?

Of course plastic gets brittle over time, it just means you have to be extra careful. I got 2 dashes from down at the wreckers without breaking anything and even if i did break the air vent i wouldn't pay Holden $100 for it id just glue it back on.

Unless of course (as mentioned) the plastic is brittle then it might snap off easy.
