    Default Manual ECU differences.

    Hey there,

Just wondering if there was any difference between the V6 T5 and Getrag ECU's?

    Thanks heaps.

I do not think there would be any differences being both manual boxes.
The only difference is between manual and auto ECU's.
Just make sure the T5 ECU is for a VS and not earlier Buick 3800's

what exactly happens if you try and use an auto ecu on a manual? can the memcal just be reprogrammed?

Without modification, it probably won't start. When you start an auto, it needs to be in park or neutral, and you need to modify the auto loom so that this connection is made. Reverse lights also have to be wired up. The speedo won't work as there is a difference between auto and manual speed sensors, I think. On top of that, the auto ECU thinks that there is no transmission, so it will always throw error codes.

I'm not sure if the auto configuration can simply be written out by a new memcal.

ecu's are pretty much the same just some dont have the speed sensor componants inside to work the T5 vss.you need to make sure you run either T5 specific or getrag specific memcal as well as both boxes have differnt gear ratios and its programmed in the tune what each gear ratio is so the ecu jnows whats going on to base its fuel figures on.the L67 ecu and RF police ecu with silver ecu plugs can do all auto and both manuals fine.there are other variants that have the circuitry needed its a bit of luck weather your auto car has one or if it lucked out when it was being assembled.the number of importance is the number on the barcode stuck on the ecu plug of the ecu that tells you what family ecu it is and weather it has the manual bits inside for the T5

Thanks Delco, I was hoping you would pop up.

So your saying that some auto ECUs only need a manual memcal and a bit of loom modification? Does that mean that you can blank out all of the auto bits and pieces with a new memcal tune? Is there a place where a list of compatible ECUs are?

What about the people that have written about how they are not able to get their cars to idle properly or their fuel consumption is through the roof using a converted auto ecu?

    I'm full of questions today!

    Hey Delco,

Does that mean that if I got an ecu for a getrag, and plopped in my custom tune for a T5 setup, would I be sitting pretty then? or would it still balls up?

nah the getrag uses the same inputs and speed sensor as the auto pretty much. best to find the police RF ecu which is easy spotted buy its metal coated plugs or a supercharged ecu or start checking bar codes on the plugs at pick a part till you find the correct one to work the T5
