I have a 1996 VS commodore running a predominantly standard Ecotec.
It blew a radiator around 4 months ago, I got a new one put in along with a new thermostat and gasket. Also, not to long before that I had asked for the cooling system to be thoroughly flushed…
However I’ve recognized that the money I was spending taking my car to this particular mechanic would have been utilized better in the fireplace. I honestly don't have evidence that they ever did anything I paid for. (Radiator was through a different group).
Starts up well, last I checked it reaches mid range on the temp gauge, fan kicks in and the temp stabilizes stationary. On the road it complains about traffic and cools well with momentum / air flow at night.
I just replaced the gaskets from the valley up and discovered that the water holes looked as though someone had done their business in them, I found a consistently medium brown colored paste / gunk built up roughly 3mm thick around the opening. I shudder to think what the rest of the engine is like.
I’m wondering what the most effective way to clean water lines is.
Pressure plus cleaning product? which, where, how?
I'd just use one of the propriety flush products and then reverse flush both the block, radiator and heater separately with thermostat housing removed. If you are really keen you can remove the knock sensors to flush crap from the bottom of the block. I think the main thing to watch for is to completely remove any traces of the radiator cleaner before filling with the proper coolant as the cleaner is corrosive.
