Driving over to get my gas serviced today i had driven approx 15 kms and it went into limp mode. i stopped to check it out and turned the motor off and went to start it up again flat battery. so called the outlaws to get a jumpstart. while i was waiting i cleared the codes. got it started it drove fine picked it up from the gas guy this arvo all fine halfway home limp mode again so it was raining turned the wipers on and they were really slow no indicators would would work got home no power put another battery in it done the code check and codes 27 & 31 came up also tested the alternator it came up 11volts gave it a whack and it came up to 14.7 volts would a stuffed alt do this or what. its got me pulling what hair i got left out .
code 31 is theft signal deterrent missing. Normally happens when the little nob on the key head isnt connecting to the metal ring around the ignition barrel. This can sometimes cause your car to not start, as its virtually an immobiliser.
no idea what code 27 is though.
Either the brushes in your alternator are sticking or worn out (cost $55 to replace) or the main cable to the rear of the alternator is corroded and making intermittent contact. This cable can overheat which makes the copper wires brittle and they then 'snap'. To check, remove the plastic engine cover and inspect/wobble the big cable located under the big nut at the rear of the alt. If it's loose/burnt/brittle/broken then replace it.
Either of the above will cause your problem which is caused by low voltage (ECU will not run under 12.0VDC)
Good Luck.
my vn wagon did the same sort of thing a while back and with the no indicators and slow wipers and it turned out that the earth cable had broken due to some umm "hard driving"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_M74_Z_ug0E"
