busted sincros??????????

hey guys, just wondering if somebody would have an idea????

i got a 5spd manual box and all the yarder with it quite cheap for my vr series 2.
had t change it because the auto was stuffed and i like to drive not just steer.
the reason it was cheap is because it wont let me go from 4th to 3rd. i have to pump it into 2nd then back to 3rd. is this a busted sincro???? all other shifting works fine as in 1st to 2nd, to 3rd, to 4th and to 5th. just not 4th to 3rd.

any help would be awsom.

maybe check adjustment first.

It shouldn't be the synchros if you can go from 2nd to third - more likely something worn/loose in the selector rails inside the box. Also check linkages as centy suggests. I'd grab hold of a Gregorys manual - it has quite a bit about the manual box.

can you shift into that gear with the engine turned off....if the syncro rings were worn you would crash the gears as you tried to shift them too ...do you get any movement of the shifter when trying to get that gear? the first movement is the syncro rings being grabbed by the shifter sleeve and pushing it against the taper on the gear to slow it down so the sleeve can move forward and lock the gear to the shaft so there are two distinct movements when shifting gears....do you get any movement? if you get nothing (like it is solid)maybe something is broken or locking you out in the shifter mechanism however the first sign that the syncros are worn usually starts when trying to downshift as that is when you are asking most of them to grab a fast turning gear and stop it so it can be selected.

i have the same problem 4th down to 3rd just wont go in there is no movement to even try and engage the gear, i was thinking something like the detent ball getting stuck??

yeah i got no idea hey. it goes in find when its not running tho. but same as harro no movement at all
