how much to recondition my ecotec?

just after a rough price on how much to get a 3.8 reconditioned.

when i start it up it makes a strange noise then goes fine once im moving.

am i better off getting the whole thing recondioned as the engine is getting older now or take it to a mechanic and just get the actual problem fixed?

How many Klm,s? what type of of noise does it make on start up? is it a knock sound? a tap sound? could be something as simple as a worn water pump! Does the car blow smoke? Best bet is to do a compression test and have it looked over by a mech before you go swapping out the whole motor
Edit: I believe Repco do complete motors for around $3000, give your local dealer a call

yeah its like a tapping sound that happens for about 2-6 seconds everytime i start it up, not sure but me be related to another issue where my temp guage goes thru the roof when stationary for long periods?

better off to get it looked at first to find the problem then work out if its gonna be better to fix it or the engine
