    Default Transmission - Whining noise

    Hi Guys,

i have a whining noise in my VS staty's tranny, all mechanics have said it's the trans pump that is noisy and that to fix it i need to pull the trans apart however Quoting them "if ya gunna do that you might as well reco the thing".

all have quoted me 1500 to 2000 to get it done.

my question is, how full of shit are they?, do i need to reco the thing, should i, or is it cheaper to buy a already reco'd tranny and get it dropped in.

also what should it cost to do it, and how difficult would it be if i wanted to do the work myself to save $$'s.

    thanks heaps guys.
    Cheers

The prices quoted seem about right, and seeing as they all agree with the pump being the problem it probably would be more sensible to overhaul the transmission instead of just repairing it.
It all gets back to how long you want to keep the car and how much do you want to spend on it. If it was me and I was planning on upgrading in 6 months I'd just throw a can of transmission treatment into it to quiten it down....but if I loved the car and planned on keeping it for a few years then I'd reco the existing box....probably get them to do it as then I have a guarantee.
Alternatives are get one from a wrecker ~ $400 or get a reco swapover and fit it yourself...think they were ~ $1300 and not sure if they included the torque converter.
    Good Luck.

whining noise/buzzing is pump failure, the pump not sucking the oil, yes its a big job and you would pay big buck to have it done. It would also be a waste of time not reco'ing the box as the whole thing has to come apart, you may as well have them change all worn parts while going through it.
A changeover is a good option and usually cheaper as its just an R&R half a day job.
I would strongly suggest not doing it yourself, the auto has more parts than any other unit in the car.
In the long run, you'll stress, curse, throw things around and probablt still have to pay the green to get it fixed.

Yea i agree on not doing it urself if ur not savvy with mechanics and dont have 5 trolley jacks and some strong mechanically minded mates on hand. Ive done it with a mate and it was a head ache. Realistically there isnt alot to it, the trans cooler hoses, separating and reconnecting the torque converter, disconnecting the tailshaft and the bellhousing bolts. Thats the basics of it but its getting the heavy thing in and out of a space that only JUST fits it.

    Did save alotta money tho.

or you could get a swap over box from a good wrecker witha waranty, cheapest option, especially if you dont plan on keeping the car forever.

Where are you? There is a wrecker in Wollongong nsw selling low Ks VT and VX autos for $125 to $150 on ebay. There is another bloke in Inverell NSW selling one from a 3000k VT write-off. He bought motor and gearbox for $3000 and is selling the box for $700. Also on ebay

Reconditioned Transmissions Should ONLY Be About 1200-1300 Removed & Fitted...

    >>3.8L & 5.0L Have The Same Transmission Internals Too (Just The Bell-Housing Is Bigger At The Front On 5.0L..)<<

Trust Me... DON'T Buy Transmissions From The Wreckers... Unless You Plan On Reconditioning It Before You Install It... Wasting Your Time & Money Otherwise...
