I just replaced both coolant hoses and the gasket for the thermostat and now the engine is running hot after about 2 mins of idle, flushed and bleed the system and new coolant. could it be the thermostat? if it is how can i test it? it was running fine prior to the flush and new hoses. cheers for the help guys
You probably have an air lock. Bleed the system from the screw on the thermostat housing.
yer I have done that, still running hot.
no i didnt touch that just the housing and replaced the gasket.
the thermostat housing? I would take it off again (3 min job anyway) and just make sure the thermostat is placed in there properly. If ur careful u can reuse the gasket, just put some more Loctite no.3 onto it. Make sure its facing the right way up and its sitting in its little groove. also which hoses did u change again? the large radiator ones?
didnt touch the thermostat, just took the thermostat housing off and replaced the gasket, i changed both the top and bottom radiator hoses.
if you want to test the t stat take it out put it in a bowl of boiling water if the t stat comes off its seat and opens its working if not its time to get a new one

Just over 3/4, fan kicks in just after half way. just running idle aprox 2-4 mins
Hmmm all that pops into my mind is if something is blocking the water flow. Stupid question but there was nothin in the new pipes before they were fitted? And really with the temp soaring like that double check ur thermostat, maybe even renew it with a nice cool one since they are $8 a pop and u gonna have the housing off anyway.
It's difficult to see how it could be anything other than the airlock.
How was it bled? The coolant level has to be above the level of the bleed screw. Use a funnel that will seal against the radiator neck - a plastic bottle with the base cut out and the neck wrapped with electrical tape to form a seal works well. You can fill the funnel with plain water to bleed as it will remain stratified over the coolant in the radiator. That way you don't dump coolant when you remove the funnel.
The heater tap also has to be open to bleed the heater core - either wire/wedge it or set the heater controls so that it is.
My VS, V6 was also running with similar heat responses so i changed my thermostat to one that opens at a cooler water temp and now she cruises around town on around the second bar from the bottom on the guage and goes up to 1/4 or just under 1/2 for a long wait around in traffic, the specs for the thermostat that i bought from Repco are ......
Dayco DT 26A -BP it is a 44mm diameter unit and the temp setting is 180 F or 82 C , and its a good thermo keeps my baby far cooler......![]()
