Default Air Conditioner Not Cold Enough!

Hey guys and girls. I used my air conditioner today and it was coming out at room temperature and sorta warm, not cool or cold at all. It got too hot so i had to wind down the windows. Is my air con buggered or what? any advice would be appreciated

Could be a multitude of things causing the A/C to not be cold.

Check that your heater tap rod is not broken, do this by turning the dial to heat, and then look in the footwell near the centre (around where the foot rest is) and then turn it back to cold, you should see a rod move back and forth. Your heater tap could also be stuffed.

More than likely though, you will be low on gas, which means that you have a leak in the system. You can probably just top it up with new gas, but eventually it will just leak out again, plus its bad for the environment. If you go to an air con place they can fill the system up with gas and dye, so they can see where the leak is. A common place on the commodore is the evaporator, which is inside the dash, and its basically a $1000 job, because the whole dash has to come out. This is probably the worse case scenario... but should you be keeping the car for a while, its probably worth doing... and if you do, change the heater core at the same time... its extremely common for them to rust out, and its the perfect opportunity to change it with the dash out... otherwise its another $1k later on in the piece to do it all over again!

yep, most likely needs a re-gas. might be an idea to make sure the a/c clutch still works, u should feel the motor hesitate a bit when u hit the a/c button or watch the clutch while a mate hits the button and see if it kicks in

I had the same problem with my VS wagon, turned out it needed a re-gas, mechanic suggested I use a more effective A/C gas. I was dubious, but the A/C is colder than ever before.
