Default ready to torch my car

    hey
i removed my timing cover, removed the timing chain/sprocket, removed the sprocket that drives the balance shaft, replaced the chain/sprocket, and put it all back together.

Car was cranking over fine but wouldnt start due to a faulty CAS (couldnt get the stupid thing on properly with the plastic thing that holds it, so i ditched that and just bolted in the cas)

Now when i turn the engine by hand, it turns until it gets to a certain point... then it refuses to go any further. Almost like it's hitting something
Likewise if i turn it the other way... turns until it gets to that same point, and wont budge.
Wont even budge with the starter.

    What could this be?

Sounds like you've got the valve timing out of whack and a valves hitting a piston.

if the timing is not right, and you have been trying to turn it over with the starter, there is a good chance that a valve or 2 is hitting the piston and more than likely you now have a bent valve. take the timing cover back off and double check that the cam timing is spot on. and another nother note..only turn the engine in the correct direction of rotation.

put it back together, started it up and its making a horrible rattling noise.
on top of this my sump is full of water.

i guess it could be the timing cover leaking. i dunno, i give up. If my engine's not completely rooted, i'll pay someone to fix it i guess

When you took the timing case off again, did the marks in the timing gears line up? It sounds as though you've put the gears on without lining them up and have damaged some valves
If so its gonna be an expensive fix... Someone will have to remove the heads and reco them, new valves and maybe guides if they're damaged too then some new head gaskets and put it back together. Last time I priced it, it was about $600 for a head reco job but thats if you remove the heads yourself etc. Probably a similar price to do an engine swap these days.

How did you get water in your sump? Didn't you drain the fluids before taking the timing case off?

yeah they lined up... everything was fine. I turned the engine by hand, and also just with the starter, everything sounded fine.

I'm wondering if the wrecker i got the timing cover from has given me the wrong one... which may explain why water is going straight into the sump, and perhaps its not getting oil which would explain the rattling i can hear.

Are there differences in the timing covers? It certainly look the same from the outside, and bolted up the same.

could be wrong timing cover and wrong gasket, folowed by timing. its a pre ecotech yes? did the gasket look right and the timing cover to, its always better to compare. vs timing cover looks the same but is different with the oil jackets. sumtime its easier to take the old timing cover in to an ally roo bar place and get them to weld it. about 30 dollars.

ok took the timing cover off again and compared the two... they look the same. It musnt be sealing properly i guess. There's 2 bolts that i broke... thought i'd get away with it but obviously not.

One is the bottom one that holds the CAS... broken flush with the block, can't get it out at all. So i got someone to put a heli coil in the timing cover so i could screw the CAS in.

The other one , the thread is stuffed and its near the coolant line, i guess this may be the culprit. I dunno

anyways mate if your still keen on fixing it for me let me know!! I've had enough!
