this is for a friend. they have a standard vs commdore v6 with a M30 tranny, and the other day the transmission dipstick popped out and threw fluid everywhere starting a small fire. on inspection, the locking mechanism does not work, so is it as simple as replacing the dipstick or could there be something wrong with the box?? has approx 225xxxkms and does not slip at all?? any ideas? thanks
Sounds like a problem is there maybe a torn pump seal blocked breather ??? was the auto fluid level correct or overfull ??? best have the auto checked by those in the know ...
the dipstick on my VS didnt seal either mdidnt leak fluid though ,i found that if i cut a small piece of plastic (ice cream lid) and fitted it under the lever it became nice and tight
Holden did a recall for this problem, trans would blow out the dipstick when working hard, towing etc.Not sure if it was on vr or vs but all they did was remove normal trans dipstick and fitted a locking one, which fail and dont lock when they get old.Either a new dipstick,or the fix posted above
ok thanks, will pass this on and see how they go.
I'm reasonably sure you can replace the "O" rings on the locking dipstick...a lot cheaper than a new one. The "O" rings lock the dipstick in when you flip the lever down.
I have the exact same problem-transmission oil goes flying all over the rocker cover and starts burning!
Any suggestions on where would I get new "o" rings or a new dipstick from?
Holden dealer service centre?
Take the dipstick into any bearing shop - explain the problem and they will be able to supply the correct "O" ring. You could buy a new one from Holdens but it will be a lot dearer. Also check that your breather is not blocked - easiest method is to find a length of hose that fits over the dipstick hole - fit it and blow....if it wont blow the breather is blocked.
FYI
New dipstick:
$8.50 from Holden
I got one for someone yes they are cheap.
