hey all
quick question spoke to a mechanic the other night bout issues with the auto in my vs he told me from what i explained to him that it sounded like the converter has crapped itself then some ******** yobbo backyard mechanic came and picked it up today (NOT MY IDEA I COULD DO ANYTHING IT NEEDED MYSELF) he is replacing the box and i told him checkout the converter before he does anything he then told me he is replacing the box and converter also reckons if you change the converter you need to change the box, can anyone tell me if there is any truth to this i dont think it is it sounds like BS to me.
cheers

Usually when doing a trans rebuild you replace the converter and replace all the worn components in the box (or with an exchange unit 'new box') at the same time ... by the time one thing wears, usualyl everything is going or gone. I guess it's sorta like a cooling system, replace the water pump and the hoses then go shortly after as they have more stress on them etc etc.
As an example, the folks had a mitsubishi nimbus (shitbox, but thats another story) years ago as the family car. It must have been at the trans place replacing individual components 5 or 6 times over a few years before they eventually just rebuilt the entire box ... it didn't save money doing each clutch, band, the converter, pump etc individually as they went.
Back to the point though, If the converter's just prematurely failed it CAN be individualy replaced. A decent trans specialist can diagnose what exactly has failed.
What were the problems you were experiencing?
yeah i see what your saying thats fine i guess im not happy about the way things have gone to get it fixed and just having a whinge, but to answer your question over the last couple of weeks the box has been making a weird noise something like a really loud intake sucking noise anyway since this come about it has been sitting in the driveway and only to go anywhere if it really had to until i could get the time to get it diagnosed anyway the other day "she who must be adored and obeyed" had to take it out and upon the return trip somthing gave with no noise or anything and it stoped accelerating, so i asked a mechanic the other night told him the story and he said it sounds most likely that the converter has crapped. so i told the yobbo i want him to look at the converter before he changes the box he then said it going to be changed along with the box and you cant change the converter without changing the box. my view is the converter is a removable separate part to the box therefore it can be changed alone exactly like a clutch to a t5 or something i mean you dont change boxes when you change a clutch.
