Default petrol smell on a hot day, why?

today we had over 40degrees in sydney,

anyways when i got home and got out of the car, i could smell a strong petrol odour,

looked around but nothin is leaking, when i opened the bonnet i could smell it but that soon disipated,

but the smell stayed for a while at the back of the car,

    what could be causing this?

there could be a leak, but one which isnt flowing strong enough to reach the ground for example if the fuel is leaking down some cords or watever it has time to evaporate and its not reaching the ground for you to notice the leak especially when its 40 degrees

On a hot day you can expect to smell fuel evaporating despite all the anti-pollution measures so I would not worry.

i had the same issue, pull the panel out under the fuel cap in the tire arch, there's overflow and vapour lines that connect to where the fuel cap goes on and goes back to the top of the fuel tank, all mine were perished, i replaced the hoses and no more smell.
