Smile t5 playing games with me!

    Hey.
Funly enough the other night i had to drive around in 3rd gear through the city, it was painful.
All was sweet untill pulled up at the next set of lights and couldn't downshift to 1-2.. All i had was 3-5 + reverse. I was thinking maybe clutch cable or something but not sure.
All i know is 3 hours after not being driven, it went straight into 1st, 2nd, 3+ and was all normal, but every now and then it's being a bitch to get across to go up or down.
    Shoutout any ideas, Cheers all.

If it was the clutch you would have trouble with all gears. If you can select reverse while stationary with no grinding then the clutch is releasing fine. I would be checking the shifter plate screws/bolts. Maybe even remove the shifter and inspect whats going on in there. The bush that the end of the shifter pivots in could be worn.etc. If its not any of the above then its something internal.

Btw inspecting the shifter will require the plate on the trans tunnel to be drilled out, or if your luckly and the car was converted to manual hopefully they used screws instead of rivets, like me.

Common problem with T5s. Not sure how to 'fix' it, but you can overcome it by selecting reverse, then all the gears should line up again.

Zui: How the hell do you get to the first two bolts? Spanner? But then how do you get the bolts out? Theyre kinda long from memory. Seems like a pain in the ass

Stealthy: How does that work? Gears are 'lined up' by synchromesh on each gear when selected ('cept reverse). The gears on the mainshaft are always freewheeling at different speeds when not in use. All reverse does is slides an idler gear between the layshaft and mainshaft causing both shafts to turn in opposite directions. Sorry if I sound like a smartass but I just cant see how the gears are 'lined up' by selecting reverse. If you had this problem and found that selecting reverse fixed it then its defiantly a shift rail/fork/lever issue.

Not sure how it works, had the problem in my old T5, couldn't get in gear, grab reverse, and the others somehow free'd up. Wasn't a one time fluke either, thats how it was to fix. In the end that gearbox blew, so couldn't say for certain what the actual issue was.

Forgive my lack of description when saying 'lined up', i just mean, after that, it would go into gear.

Well, turns out whatever stealth meant by it lining up with reverse it worked, it shat it self then i put it into reverse and it free'd up 1st,2nd again.
Rather odd but i guess it's just an issue with T5's.
Cheers for the help with that, only thing is pretty sure my actual shifter is screwed, after a day of belting around oran park the shift came off and i was converted to a short shifter until jamming it back onto the little rubber/nylon piece..
Was thinking about a rip shifter or a 2nd hand one for a t5, anyone got any comments on the ripshifters?
    Cheers.
