An alternative point to pick up the signal wire is at the connector located exactly as described in the install instructions reproduced in the "How To"; in the harness that runs along inside the guard on the passenger side of the engine bay. It's a brown wire with a single white female connector on the end of it. I think that the connector is the same type as that used for the immobiliser LED on VP (to help ID it).

On a V6 the wire connects to the DFI at pin "E" - 3 connector terminal positions from the centre of the DFI terminal connector - still brown in colour - so you could tap into that directly.

Even easier may be to connect into it at the wire going to the leftmost connector that the instrument cluster plugs into. The wire should be at the topmost, rightmost position of the connector and brown with a red trace. I've used that on my VP Exec. and it should still be usable on a VS.
