hi all, i had my engine replaced with a newer one and was wondering if there was a place to have the odometer changed to match the newer engine. mine has done 218959 at present, but the newer engine had 166858 when it was delivered to my mechanic. is there a legal way to change to odo? ive already changed my engine number with vicroads so they are aware of the change. any help appreciated.
if your doing it so when you sell the car you can say how little kms youve done i dont think its best to change the odometer. Cause people would like to know how many kms the rest of the car has done, ie syspension, trans, diff, tail shaft, electrics ect. My VR has a replaced motor with only 170,000kms on it but my dash says 330,000 but im not changing that cause the rest of the car is affected by these kms. Also when you sell it you can just say its got a replaced motor.
my 2 cents
If its a level one or level two dash, you can pull it apart and do it yourself quite easily. If its level three, Im afraid your stuffed.
You can't change the odometer just because you have put a new engine in the car. You just record the difference in kms between the car and the new engine. The odometer must read the amount of kms the CAR not the engine has travelled. Only time when it is legal to change odometer if I'm correct is when a new dash is purchased and put in the car (due to the other one failing)
yes they can change the odo legally. not for you however as it's supposed to show the km's the car has done not how many km the engine has done.
you could do it yourself or have it done but you'd have to tell them you got a new dash and want to set it at a certain km's. and in qld you'll have to get a document signed by a jp before they will do it for you.
bottom line : you shouldn't change it.
oh and level 3 CAN be changed also... the odo reading is stored on the LCD board...
