Can anyone help! I have a vr commodore that has several issues. It was running temp on half with fan kicking in after short drives. Had radiator flushed and new thermostat installed this didn't seem to improve the temp but was told normal to run at 1/2 even car didn't run this high previously. Car would not start this morning RACV diagnosed codes 16 ECT signal voltage, 48 cam shaft pos signal and 49 cam/crank signal intermittent. Also have had problems with interior light not turning off couple of months ago removed fuse to stop prob. Are all these problems related to PCM? Contacted auto elec they want to clear codes wait for any problems as codes could be old. Car was serviced 2 months ago, battery removed so from reading other threads thought that cleared old codes? Any advice appreciated also are these expensive fixes?
If the car seems to be running OK now, then all you can do is clear the codes and see if they return like the mechanics said.
So first question - is the car running "apparently" normally albeit a bit warm?
I see this "old codes" thing thrown around a lot, and as far as I know, the ECU only stores codes for 20 ignitions from when the problem was originally detected. Unless the problem has tripped a code again, they wont be any more than 20-times-you've-started-the-car-old, Therefore they wont really be old and are probably still relevant unless you've solved whatever tripped them in the first place. 48 and 49 is almost always the crank angle sensor as they are known for chucking a wobbly on all VR-VS V6's.
Gregorys says the codes are stored for 50 starts unless cleared but I've seen other figures quoted in other workshop manuals. I know I had gearbox solenoid codes stored after the car was in LHM which went away after about 5 starts (problem was intermittent).
if you keep getting fault codes logged ,eg, engine light coming on [ instrument panel ] do a search on this forum to find HOW TO CHECK FOR FAULT CODES VR + VS V6 OR V8 then if those codes keep coming up about crank angle position , cam angle etc.. you might have to replace the crank angle sensor . especially if the car gets hard to start when the engines hot. and about the cooling system, when engine is cold fill the overflow coolant tank to the maximum level mark , then remove radiator cap , then start engine , observe radiator where cap goes , if coolant level drops then SLOWLY pour some coolant to top up radiator . after a minute or so the coolant will warm up and start rising up out of radiator . put cap back on otherwise you lose coolant. then let the motor run for a good 10 minutes or so to get to operating temp . if theres no leaks in the system and the radiator cap is good there should not be any air locks . when the motor gets to operating temp or a bit higher the electric thermo fan should start up and the temp should hold steady. if that all happens it should indicate a normal cooling system . SHIT I FORGOT TO TELL YOU TO SET THE HEATER CONTROLLS ON DASHBOARD TO HOT POSITION BEFORE DOING ANY OF THE ABOVE , TO THE COOLING SYSTEM . if after doing all this and you have problems with overheating or loss of coolant in overflow tank , get a mechanic to do a cooling system pressure test. hope this helps you......cheers.
