Hi this is a bit off topic for this forum but I need some advice to help out my brother. He has a nissan 180sx and he blew the turbo not long ago he ended up taking it to ultra tune and getting a new one for $1800 he has had it for a week and took it to go get tuned and due to something to do with the angle the ultra tune guys put the turbo in ment that the gage wasn't working properly and they had it waaaaaaay to high, like 30psi. he now has blown a piston ring and a couple more a due to go with a total estimated bill of around $2000.
The problem is he's kinda a little wussy and doesn't want to go yell at them (my recommendation) I work in retail communications and we have the telecommunication ombudsman to sort out complaints like this is there something similar he can contact regarding the work done on his car.
p.s I do have a Holden VS so this post isn't completely random.
a friend of mine had the same problem with ultra tune with his twin turbo soarer rip off pricks
Out of curiousity, why would he go to such a general service mechanic to do performance work?
He is an apprentice butcher and when the turbo went that was the closest place plus he works 7 days a week so its a little hard to organise anything else. But yes, in hindsight epicly bad decision.
contact the mta (motor traders assoc.) basically the same as the telecom ambudsmen

that ill agree on, depends though, the old turbo might have been out for a while, or slowly dieing down, new one in might appear to provide the power it had lost, etc etc or yes just didnt say anything
at the end of the day, they should have checked boost pressure after they had installed it

The problem is he knows next to nothing about cars and the new turbo was bigger so i dont blame him for not noticing it was to good to be true. thanks for the help though i will contact the mta. just feel bad for him seems like these days whenever you get something done by a "professional" you get let down.
where abouts is this ultra tune?
i tried ultra tune because they are cheaper so i thought why not. but i know now that they are crap. i wouldnt recommend them to anyone. especially people with older cars like the VR. you need to find a good mechanic who has experience because ultra tune, the one i went to, have young guys who dont have very much experience. its why its cheaper.
no it wouldn't
because the turbo would have been totally out of its efficiency range, and most likely made no more power than at 21psi..
the standard turbo on an SR20det or CA18det wouldn't have done anywhere near 30psi anyway.
it could boost too high for the engine, plus by this point it would just be blowing hot air anyway, and providing no performance increase, but it could still damage the engine with no real gain.
i got a post written last night then the net dropped out....
was going to say it might have boosted to the point it cant self adjust to the boost and gone running way lean and power dropped off. although it would have been pinging its dinger off

Good Luck.
Nobody likes to be ripped off, especially one's brother but:
1. Why was a 'bigger' turbo fitted? Obviously then UT fitted the incorrect part right?
Did they ask your brother before fitting this part and if not then you have a case against them.
2. If indeed it was running at 30psi [I'm not an expert with turbo's] surely he would have noticed this almost immediately after exiting the UT driveway !
Maybe he did, but thought hoorey this is great who cares........result blown engine.
Alternatively he did not, who knows right?
At any rate, if the incorrect part was fitted without the owners consent then you may have a case, otherwise good luck taking it to the small claims tribunal. It will cost a heap of money and if you loose your stuffed.
I suggest you ask your brother some detailed questions before proceeding any further.
Cheers
the ultra tune has to be registered with mta befor the mta can do anything about it, if there not its small claims trib' or fair trading, but the amount of time he will waste on trying to prove him self right he's better off getting a second job to get the 2000 to fix it,it will be alot quicker and easyer. it takes so much effort and so much of ya time going thru it all with mta,or fair trading and so much stress on ya head and chances are ya wont get diddly shit off them. from my experience its deffinatly not worth the effort trying.... i've been going thru it for 3years now and going to court again in a few weeks and its not looking good. theres no way ya can prove he didnt get it back and flog the crapper out of it to make it blow or if it was on its last leg's already. unless ya can get expert wittnesses to say its the deffinate cause of the engine blowing ya dont have a chance, even with proof it will still be long and hard.. thats my opinion anyway.
