    Default irs conversion

ive just been searching the forum and cannot find anything on this topic..can a irs rear end be put into a non irs vr sedan. im just wondering as i can get a complete irs assembly including the support frame for free off a mate. does the support assy just bolt up to where the orig upper and lower trailing arms bolt to? has anyone done an irs conversion? any info would be great, thanks.

Theres no way its just a bolt in job. Will require getting an engineer to weld the whole rear of an IRS car onto it, because the floor pan is a completely different shape.

Might aswell forget about that idea, and just buy an IRS car.

thanks stealthy.yeah im able to do the welding no probs, but understand there is just way too much work involved with that. i thought holden might have been kind enough to use the same floor pan, just different components depending on spec level.. ah well you win some, you loose some.

Stick with the solid rearend - the IRS has no real advantage and a lot more things to go wrong plus camber wear. The way it has been done is using a "cut and shut"....but just not worth it.

The only advantage is better handling. Camber wear isn't a problem with a camber kit....

Go buy two IRS cars for the price it will cost for the conversion.

It's a fair question but I think it is a pointless thing to do because it will cost thousands and will require more than just a floor pan/IRS cradle conversion and a engineers certificate to work. As said before you will need to get a camber correction kit which is an added cost and plus it's an old car so I wouldn't even both throwing the money at it.

Stick with a live axle, true it doesn't handle as good but it doesn't bog down like IRS does. You'll save heaps of money, just go and buy a factory IRS car.
