hey guys i drive a vs clubby and today the temp got to the red zone and got the temp light on the dash, luckily i wasnt far from home pulled up the driveway popped the hood and water was bubbling from the water pump i think. i doubt its the head gaskets coz the oil is normal color, the radiator isnt bubbling with the cap off when the car is on idle and no funky smoke comin out from the tail. as soon as i top the resevoir up and have the car idling its empty in about 2 minutes. am i on the right track?
Doesn't sound like it, but check the top tank of the radiator for a fine crack.. mine cracked a while ago and I know a few others who have had the same thing happen.. But only of them had such a temperature rise.. sounds like yours is losing it much quicker.
i had similar problems with mine , and know of others with the same issue , seems it comes as standard on all vs commodores
If "water was bubbling from the water pump" it probably is the water pump leaking from the front seal or the gasket has gone. Try putting a mirror under the waterpump as see if there is coolant escaping thru the weep hole.
I had corrosion in the inlet manifold around the thermostat housing.
Luckily caught it early when my mechanic noticed a trace if dribbleing down the front of the block below the thermostat.
Might not be the problem but another spot to check.
