Default VR V8 Ute Gas tank

    Gday guys,
I'm just wondering how many of you with Vr/Vs Ute's have them on gas?
How's it go, what'd it cost for the conversion etc?
Also, does anyone have the tank installed in any different places than straight in the tub?
I've got one of these Roll Tops from Blueys Ute gear, and the barrel where the top rolls too, is where the tank is usually mounted, so if i mounted in front of that, it would make my tub basically useless.

I was wondering if it possible to mount the tank, or 2 tanks, in the longe range fuel tank hole?

    Cheers guys,
    -Tom

iv had mine put on gas mine is a V6 though and iv had a few problems but that was because of the installer the only problems im having at the moment is my car is lagging on fuel but i think that is to do with o2 sensors and mine has been installed under where the spare tyre goes only problem is the spare has to float around in the back.
and its only a 55L tank i think as with the ones that you put in the tub you get more
all up mine cost me 2600 but got 2k rebate so was good deal.

    Cheers for the reply mate.
I'm planning on spending the week running on gas, and the weekend on fuel.
I'm not sure if I'll get a tank where the spare is either though, i've got a twin exhaust, which is passing over either axle of the diff. It may fit, but I'm not sure.
Could you grab me some rough measurements of the tank when ya get a chance mate, I'd really appreciate it.
    Cheers,
    -Tom

Just a question leathal11 whats the ground clearence when its parked as pictured ? measured from the gas tank shield to ground ? looks too low to me to pass roadworthy , and the ramp angle test here in vic , is there a heat sheild on the exhaust where it passes the tank on the left hand side ?

yeah its to low as i think its ment to be 200mm off the ground and its only 130mm and no there isnt a heat sheild.... as i just got my exhaust changed and it hasnt gone back on yet!

here it is on a nice steep drive with the old shitty exhaust and it clears it just

Ok ramp angle is measured from the back wheel where it sits on the ground to the lowest point of your rear overhang weather it be body panel or towbar .

fuel tank sender can be reached by removing panel behind drivers seat if needed . its a comprise of space and fuel capacity and remaining legal too at the end of the day ..

Hey, I have a gas tank under the tray too, but mine is a round one and fits up where the spare goes, its around 55 litres too, But it doesn't sit anywhere near as low as leathal11's one.
I get around 250-300k's out of 50 litres on a 5ltr if that helps.
Also not sure about cost of install as the previous owner did it all.

i have a 5ltr on gas, not a ute but yeah same as flacky i get 300kms to 50 litres. there is a slight loss of power on gas but it's worth it when you're saving $50 a week. can always flick over to petrol if you really want to give it a squirt anyway

conversion put me $500 out of pocket after the $2000 rebate. you have to have the full amount ready first, then you claim it back afterwards.

Donut tanks are generally 220 - 250mm in depth and wont hang as low as normal cylinder tanks but have smaller cap compared to some cylinder tanks but they cost twice as much $660 trade price compared to a cylinder tank $260 - $400 trade price depending on size. Rebate is now $1750 as of the 1-07-09

Thats fantastic. Thanks heaps for the pics and info Lethal. I'll go suss it out now.
I'm riding lows atm i think, so its not as low as yours, still need the mobility of a higher car. Donut tank might be the go, Even with the cost. Will look into it. For you guys getting 300k's from 50ltrs of gas, whats the comparable figure on petrol? Cause around the city i get something like 280kms from a tank of 95 octance. I have a heavy foot. The cars got otr CAI, larger air box top, k+n, hsv extractors, twin 2.5" pressbent exhast, twin high flow cats, twin straight thru mufflers, stage 2 shift kitted auto, corvette servo, larger boost valve, and greenfoam tune.

Just curious what you blokes get km's wise on petrol, cause if i get 300kms out of gas, that'd be better economy than the petrol lol.
    Cheers,
    -Tom

Also, do you have to carry a spare to remain legal? Cause thats a fkn pain in the ass if i put a tank where it should go.

no problem mate, um i was getting around 200km out of the 55L or what ever it is. and i get about 300km out of my petrol in a V6 lol and all it has is catback and CAI

and not sure i think you do have to have a spare as i think you can even get defected if your spare is bald but dont take my word on that haha just something i have heard along the way.
but yeah atm i dont have my spare in my car haha woops

Yeah it'd get in the way for sure. Thanks again for the help mate, I'm probly gonna expect about 250kms from the gas maybe. I've got a feeling my tank/fuel lines r leaking, so my fuels probly going there lol.

depends what state you're in, you probably said it but i'm tired . in vic you don't have to carry a spare but if you do have a spare then it has to be roadworthy.

leathal your economy is really bad man . i get 300kms out of 50 litres of gas in a 5ltr, and on petrol i think i did about 500kms to a tank (80l) but that was a year ago and i don't want to waste a tank of petrol just for a test
