Default Replacing Speed sensor VR V6 1993-1997

    Hi,

My speed signal and odometer are not working.

I am doubting my speed sensor at the back of the auto transmission is not working.

    1) How do you check or test if it is still working?

    2) Where can I get hold of a cheap second hand replacement one? What would roughly be the cost?

    3) How to you replace it? Is there too much hassles to do it?

    4) What tools do I need and other provisions such as a drip tray ?

I have got a an analogue and a digital multi-meter plus some other home mechanic tools.

    Hi,

Thank you for the info. My sensor sits at the back of the auto transmission just before the crank shaft. It is at the far end of the trans. If you are looking from outside the car . It is on the left hand side from the front at the drivers side. There is a hexagonal bolt holding it. I went to a second hand dealer, he did not have one but he said that they cost $40.- . I checked with another second hand dealer, they have one but I need to get my tools and pull one out from the car in their yard. It is also $40.-.

My question is how do you check if the speed sensor is faulty or not? I have got a multimeter and the present one in the car is gving me a reading of 1.312 Kohms. Is this OK or there could be other problems inside the sensor such as the rotating probe and mechanism?

I never tried to pull one out and the second hand dealer was telling me to prepare myself for an oil spill as about 70% of the trans. oil will drain out when I pull the sensor. How did you go with yours ? Did you have the same problem?

    Hi,

Would you please elaborate more on this point. The reason I am asking is that I am doubting also the BCM in the car ( Body Control Module). I rechecked the error code. I am getting 12 which means everything is fine in the ECU. Does this mean that the BCM is also good?

error code 12 means all is good, Delcowizzid is saying that if it's the speed sensor that's gone it wont be changing gears because the computer can't sense when to change gears. So if it's not that it's possible something with the cluster that's the problem.

If you have the speed alert module on your dash you can hold down the 2 buttons while turning the key on to get the digital speedo which will be read from your speed sensor

    Hi,

Thank you for the info. It all comes clearer to me now. I do not have a speed alert gadget on my dash. The instrument cluster is analogue or the classical look. It is not LCD panel.

I am going through the process of elimination. My second question was what about the the Body control module, the BCM. If I am getting code 12, does this mean that the BCM is OK. The reason I am asking this question is that I bought a second hand instrument cluster and changed it. I am still having the same problem.

Is it possible that I could have a loose connection from the dash connector No. 2 to the instrument cluster? How do you check that with or without driving the car?

I have an analogue and a digital multimeter. Would you please guide me ?

in my gregories manual the speedo wire comes out at the cluster as a violet wire with white stripe, then goes to the ecu pin C5, you need to check this wire with your multimeter and check for no breaks

    Hi The 1,

I checked the Violet/White stripe wire going from the ECU at C5 to Connector No. 2 on the dash at No. 2pin which is for the speed signal on the cluster. The wire is good though there was a tiny bit of a resistance in the line. Does it go through a resistor? I could not see the wire going through the BCM! Am I correct ?

I have the Gregory service manual No. 265 . Is it the same you are having? If so, which page are you looking at? If not and it is a different manual, can you go on line and get the schematic diagram?
