So I had a Trans in my car that had no reverse.... I took the gamble on getting a second hand one off eBay. My new one drives well... at 1st!
It can go sometimes for 2mins sometimes for 30mins before the engine light is triggered off, code 68 appears. I have looked into this and it tells me "trans component slippage". When the light turns on the gears start to change with a little thud. If I pull up to a set of lights that just turned red, I can turn the key off completely and start it up again when it changes green and it will drive ok for another while. Also I have noticed that if I leave it in 3rd gear it takes longer to start the problem.
I was thinking it must be an electrical fault as opposed to a mechanical problem??? Maybe a servo or something??? If so would it be beneficial to put a stage 2 shift kit and a filter and flush???
Or..... is it just plain old poked!!!???
Hope this hasn’t bored you to much; I tried to put in as much detail as poss but if I left anything out just ask.
Thanks Heaps
It sounds like you need a reconditioned box.If its slipping its usually a sign that she's stuffed.Did you reset your ECM/PCM after you installed the one you bought? It might have errors logged which need to be cleared before it will run properly.
no i haven't, how would i go about doing this myself? or do i need to take it into a holden dealer? that code 68 wasn't showing on the previous trans.
Just disconnect the battery for 5 minutes. That will do it.
The trans does sound on it's last legs - maybe throw a can or two of treatment in it to cut down the clutch slippage - Lucas seems to be the flavour of the day.
i have just brought one the other day but havent put it in cause i dont want to overfill the trans, it is on the full mark as it is and the contents off the bottle is 300mls, it is wynns trans treatment.
i have had the battery disconnected over night doing other things to it but it did seem to clear for a while but came back. when i talked to a hsv mechanic he said it has to be taken in to them to reset the computer, but i was thinking they just want my money. not sure really!!!! lol
It should not need resetting by them as far as I'm aware. You can easily drain some trans fluid by loosening one of the trans cooler hoses - pick the lowest one and just let it drain ....it will be slow - you can make it quicker by running the engine BUT the stuff sprays everywhere so I'd just let it drain slowly.
Yeah, they dont have to do it,just removing the lead from the battery for 5 will reset it.
Have you got the correct fluid in it?
Dexron 111 (3)is the recommended trans fluid. The one you have is the right one.
thnks heaps for all the input.... more the merrier! thanks
The reason it is reccomended to take it into the holden dealership to clear the code is because they will clear the code with a scan tool, rather then disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it which runs the risk of frying components such as voltage reg, ecu etc. Very unlikely, but it happens.
It's on it's way out, exactly the same thing happened with my old VR, code 68, auto trans component slipping....had it serviced, lasted a little longer, slipping was getting worse (especially under load/going up hills etc...) and it eventually started to lose 1st gear at lights....and then 4th/overdrive, ended up with only 2nd and 3rd gears, thats when I finally decided to get a reco, lol.
