hey guys drive 1997 VS commodore and on a full tank of petrol am gettin 355kms
is this right? im no that heavy footed but the car has done over 220000ks
is right ?anything i can doo ?
cheers NI-91-KO
That's pretty average for city driving. Best you can do is service it well.
The easiest thing to do to save fuel is to make sure your petrol filter and air filter are changed regularly.Run some injector cleaner through the fuel system every now and then. And check your tyre pressures, this makes a difference on fuel economy, and I also find that using the 98 octane fuel(BP ultimate, vortex 98,shell v-power)that I get less fuel at the bowser because its dearer, but it will go further on the 98 than it would on normal 91 octane fuel. The motor makes more power on this fuel, which increases efficiency and actually saves fuel.Another thing to mention is carrying heaps of junk around in the boot etc,Increase in weight means increase in fuel usage. And filling up your petrol tank means you have to carry heaps of extra weight around, just fill it to half full, less weight, less fuel used.

mechanically you could try replacing the oxygen sensor they only have a service life of 80,000kms and they help regulate the fuel ratio, also the coolant temp sensor. is your car V8 or V6?
If I got 355km from a tank I'd be very happy - I get about 300km with suburban running with my VS at 226000km. Installed new O2 sensors last year but only noticed an improvement on highway cruising where I now get about 650km from a tank but only 300km doing the suburbs.
If you examine your driving habits you can find how to improve economy - in my case I reverse about 60 metres to get on the road and then it's traffic lights every 300metres or so, then waiting to turn into a parking spot....all low speed with the A/C flat out. Very inefficient but it beats walking.
thanks for the helpguys
i've got new o2 sensors just gotta get them installed
'westbad' my cars a v6
and yer i changed my fuel filter n oil filter last month didnt make much of a difference i guess not much i can do![]()
The oil filter wont do much to save fuel. The air and petrol filters are the main ones to replace. Also the km's your getting seems to be around what other people are getting,so its not to bad.I get a little bit better than that ,but not a great deal.maybe around 380 to a tank.Thats highway and town driving mixed together. The Air conditioner will make it use more as well.
i get around 250-280 in my ute and thats a V8 i had a V6 VS a few years back and that was easy doing 500k's to a tank.
The viscosity of the engine oil used could make a difference to the fuel consumption and also the rate of acceleration used to reach crusing speed.
Somebody also mentioned using premium fuel to acheive better engine efficiency, so thats another option that i may well also have to try myself.

Technically the thread should be called "Drinking Petty". Petroleum is a liquid. You drink a liquid![]()
