check engine light on, no faults, no cruise control!

ok, so my mate turns up and tells me his VR's check engine light has come on. I check the codes - 12. Weird, disconnect battery and clear ecm. Check engine light comes on again, but still no other fault codes, just 12. I tell him I will check Just Commodores (coz this is the ONLY place to go) He's gone and just rung to say his cruise control has stopped working and his brakes feel like the are sticking on. Could it be an ABS fault?

Has anyone else experienced similar issue?

It's possible the car is in Limp Home Mode - which locks the car in 3rd and makes the car feel like the brakes are on. LHM should log a code. Make sure you see 3 lots of 12's and then the error codes are displayed.

hey Hako, so 3 lots of 12 are displayed before fault codes? Bugger, I only saw 2!!

LHM could be intermittant? He reckons it came right for awhile then got slow again then was fine after a short while?

He's just called me agin to say it's shifting hard between 3rd and 4th, could it be trans solenoid o'ring?

Do the codes again....let it run thru at least 6 sequences. You probably will get a 81 or 82 which is for solenoids in the trans not operating/sticking. LMH will only come into play when solenoids are playing up....if they come good you are OK.....but like all things they do not self-repair and eventually fail totally.
